How good are smartphone cameras, really? Companies like Apple are always making a big show about the best camera phones capabilities than more expensive and special equipment. But for most parts, phone cameras have not made it in high-Brow filmmaking.
If you listen to some of pre-relaes promotion, then “28 years later” a film may be a film to change it. A big thing was made Regarding the fact that the film (partially) was filmed using the iPhone 15 Pro Max, rather than more traditional film production equipment. And now, after watching the film, I am not sure that this smartphone is advertised for filmmaking that some have excluded it.
Don’t misunderstand me, I think “28 years later” is a great film that lasts up to the reputation of “28 days later” in 2002. But it is probably not going to establish any major film production trends.
How ’28 years later’ was shot
I was surprised to know that very few films have actually taken advantage of smartphone cameras in the years. Perhaps in addition to a couple of Sodengberg films, “Anasen” and “High Flying Bird,” “28 years later” is the only film that people have heard that actually uses a smartphone in its shooting.
Despite some earlier reports, the entire film was completely shot on the iPhone. It was one of several pieces of devices used which allowed director Danny Boyle to allow Danny Boyle To shoot the film more easily In a quite a far away part of Northern England.
That device included drones, A goat And various various cameras rigs that were selected for their mild weight, ease of use and general flexibility.
The use of non-traditional devices also calls back on the original film, which depends on a canon XL1 digital video camera for some sequences. Glasses on that camera are laughing with modern standards, but the then $ 4,000 cameras provided flexibility and mobility, which could not offer traditional film cameras.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max used in “28 years later” is not used as a simple point and shoot cameras, though. As we have seen with photos on the set, they are associated with a large amount of additional equipment.
It includes professional looking lenses and mounts, which you are not going to see with the average smartphone user, as well as special multi-phone rigs that were designed to offer much more viewing than the same device. In the most extreme cases, the rig actually provides 180 degree vision, which Boyle claimed that the poor man’s pill can be used to make.
They are very good shots, and I am guessing that the 20-iPon rig is much cheaper and more versatile than a dedicated bullet-time rig-either when you’re filming in place. But I was not completely affected by the quality of the film’s picture.
“28 years later” is not a picture-perfect Hollywood-but it works
There is about half a scene through “28 years later” that is perfectly shot in the night vision. I will not explain further details for the reasons that spoil, but one thing I saw about the scene was how much pixel it was. I am sure it was intentional, and a by-product of night vision cameras used in filming of the scene.
But it switched a switch to my brain, and later I could not see the flaws in the quality of the overall camera. I found it a little distracted, and I could not help, but wonder what cameras are being used, the reason for this was.
Iphones are not bad cameras, especially not recent models such as iPhone 15 Pro Max. But no matter what Apple says, they are not in the same league such as absurd expensive equipment used by major motion pictures. And I have thought whether this film had the image of that serious, slight noise.
I was believed to have been watching the film in a small theater, with the seats that I liked with the screen. But what I saw did not change, and if it was thanks to the use of iPhone and other lower budget equipment, it is definitely going to be a barrier to the cameras that are earning their place in the mainstream film production process.
But I also have to accept that this can be intentional. Danny Boyle is notable to avoid ancient, picture-perfect Hollywood shots-especially in his previous films, such as “28 days later.” The film also fits the tone of films in this process. It is dirty, chaotic and is painting it just like the world.
Many people must have forgotten about this, as it was not available on streaming or discs for many years. But if you go back and see it, then the quality of the actual picture looks like garbage. And I say that even though it is one of my favorite films.
Ground level
I really don’t know that I was expecting to go into “28 years later”, beyond the initial reactions to praise the film. This is a great film, you must definitely go and see it, if you are not already. Just be warned that the picture is not an affair of your standard shiny Hollywood. It is not that kind of film, and it seems clearly clear that it was filmed on an iPhone.
As invented, the film had to use iPhones to help in the film, I never look at that trend to steam.
