5G and satellite connectivity: a perfect pair for emergency services

Emergency services have to face unique challenges that combine for a unique solution requirement. These challenges include preserving data to move vehicles crossing diverse areas, a large number of rural areas who have very little or no cellular connectivity and often work in extreme environment.

Emergency services with fixed sites and vehicles require reliable and flexible connectivity to ensure that they provide services in the most efficient and safe manner. Due to these unique challenges, when choosing between satellites or cellular for the most reliable solution to provide connectivity to emergency services, the answer may be simple: use both.

    What are Leo satellites?

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite internet systems, such as Starlink By Spacex, are sewn for organizations working in rural or remote areas, which lack cellular infrastructure. Starlink provides an alternative connection when cellular service is or not available. However, Leo satellite has boundaries around the capacity and cost. Set cost and ongoing membership fee, the effect from weather can also make satellite a challenge for emergency services as primary connectivity that contains vehicles operating between urban and rural areas.

The combination of Leo satellites and 5G provides a more flexible network and provides enhanced connectivity by supplying more bandwidth. Starlink expansion coverage and combination of strength of advanced capabilities of 5G, can maintain emergency services, no difference. The two technologies offer high performance, reliable, safe WAN access to pairs.

Use the case: Multi-Wan Network Fellover

For organizations with fixed sites, it is common to rely on wired connectivity in the form of primary links. However, it is important to maintain uninterrupted operations to ensure reliable backup solutions. If a wired line goes down due to infrastructure or weather issues, the failure link using 5G may mean zero connectivity loss for an organization. Whether the cellular link should be unavailable, the network traffic may then fail on the satellite link.

Use the case: Failure from cellular to satellite

Consider an emergency services with a certain site that requires 24/7 online, but operates in a remote place with some cellular coverage. Where wired lines are not available, cellular primary link is formed. While the cellular link handles traffic under normal conditions, it automatically fails on the satellite if the performance declines or the link is inaccessible for any reason.

Use the case: Important communication in moving vehicles

Given that wired connectivity is not possible in vehicles, taking advantage of a dual-yodem router that supports several cellular carriers for wireless-to-vyroles failure is optimal. The satellite can also be deployed as a third backup option where cellular is not available. For example, a fire truck struggling with a wildfire in a remote area can withstand boundaries in cellular coverage. In such cases, satellite connectivity can serve as a phelove link, which ensures continuous connectivity for mission-mating communication.

But what if there is no cellular coverage in an organization working in an organization? It is still important to deploy an enterprise class router for safety and provide advanced networking if dual starlink connections have been deployed, but which routers and how connected devices are managed, is important.

What to see in a provider

In addition to the requirement of an enterprise grade router, which has the ability to manage complex link fellover landscapes, there are three other major requirements to consider, especially for emergency service operators:

    1. Simplified management: Emergency service organizations are often revived in IT and networking. It is important to have a refined network that can be easily managed by a small technical workforce.

    2. Security: While the 5G cellular network is well known to provide extremely safe connections based on internal encryption, most Leo satellite systems have limited security features.

    3. Link bonding: In some examples, it makes sense to combine multiple links in a single virtual path, so it is important to have a solution that provides flexibility for all types of architecture.

There is a search for 5G router that provide connectivity to users with cellular, Leo satellites and even wired connections. Similarly, solutions that provide centralized management and visibility of all connected devices – including geolocation, connectivity status and troubleshooting – ensure that these devices will operate 24/7 without any interruption.

Even though the 5G network provides the underlying security, emergency services should also look for the providers that include a zero-trust network that can replace traditional VPN and private APN. The zero trust enables flexible van links with SD-van link bonding and through rapid failure to a secondary link: For example, switching from a cellular carrier from a cellular carrier that has a strong signal, or switching to a satellite link from the cellular link. Advanced web safety protects users from emails and web attacks.

It should be easy to manage early and from anywhere to deploy these solutions. This avoids adding workloads to lean IT teams, and this means that they do not need to manage and deploy a separate security stack.

    Summary

Despite your organization’s approach, the powerful coupling of cellular and satellite promises a more flexible network for spontaneous connectivity. This joint connectivity ensures that emergency services can continue to effectively and safely work in various environments to overcome the challenges of limited or incredible coverage.

By taking advantage of both technologies, emergency services can maintain significant communication links, increase statusable awareness, and ensure timely distribution of services, eventually improving public safety and operational efficiency.
