“I feel lucky” has been a main feature of Google Search since the company launched in 1998. Most of us, of course, select specific search experience, scrolling through different links until we find the URL we are looking for. But when you feel confident that your search has a clear destination in the query, I think lucky can direct you directly there.
I believe, I have not used the button much through all my years of googly. Truth, I rarely go to Google.com – once the browsers integrated the Google search with the address bar, I started searching directly from there. But whenever I find myself on Google’s homepage, it is good to see that I always have an option – if I feel really lucky.
However, this may not be a very long case. As mentioned by the vergeSome Google users recall the “I feel lucky” button. Its place is completely something else: AI mode.
Google first introduced AI mode back in March. Do not confuse it for AI interviews, the AI-rendered summary that appears on top of some Google discoveries. Instead, the AI mode transforms Google search into a bit of a chatbot, allowing the user to ask multi-part questions at a time. This feature is to combine several discoveries in a single, complex query.
For example, you can ask AI mode something like this, “When is the best time to book flights to Hawaii, and what should I pack to travel?” Then you get a breakdown of each question in your query- “Best time to book book flights,” tips for booking flights, “Packing required for air,” with links of sources you can see yourself. If you have ever used AI chatbot like Gemini or Chatgate for web search, it is notable – for warning that “AI reactions may include mistakes.”

The AI mode is not yet fully rolled out (it is available to the first Google Labs examiners) nor replaced that I feel lucky for all users who see it. For example, on my personal Google account, I am still seeing that I feel lucky. AI mode is located only at the right of the search bar. But the fact is that Google is experimenting with swaping the heritage button, yet another AI feature is disappointing.
There is something ironic in replacing me with a lucky button with AI mode: if you are relying on AI to make your search, then you maybe you Are Feeling lucky, because the AI systems can either make mistakes or create the facts completely – as the disastrous AI overview of Google proved to be rolout. In fact, as the AI models move forward, they are more “hallucinations”, and no one really knows why.
Use AI to help your web discoveries as you want – just understand what you are doing yourself.
