Openai announced on Friday that it is starting a research preview of the company’s most capable AI coding agent Codex.
Codex is powered by Codex-1, a version of the company’s O3 AI Reasoning Model is adapted for software engineering functions. Openai says that the “cleaner” produces the code compared to the Codex-1 O3, adhere to the instructions more accurately, and will run the test on its code until the passing results are obtained.
The Codex agent runs in a sandbox, virtual computer in Cloud. By connecting with Github, the Codex atmosphere can be preloaded with your code repository. Openai says that AI coding agents will take any to one to 30 minutes to write simple features, to fix bugs, answer questions about their codebase and run a test between other tasks.
Openai says, Codex can handle several software engineering functions simultaneously, and it does not limit users from reaching their computer and browser, while it is running.

Codex is starting from today, which is for Chattgpt Pro, Enterprise and team customers. Openai says that users will have “generous access” to Codex to start, but in the coming weeks, the company will apply the rate limit to the tool. The users will then have the option to buy additional credit to use Codex, an Openai spokesman Techcrunch.
Openai has planned to expand the Codex Access for Chatgpt Plus and EDU users soon.
The AI tool for software engineers, also known as vibe coders, has increased popularity in recent months. K CEO Google And Microsoft claims that about 30% of their companies have now been written by AI. In February, Anthropic released its own agent coding tools, cloud code, and in April, Google updated its AI coding assistant, Gemini code Assist with more agentic capabilities.
That vibe coding has increased businesses behind the AI coding platforms to increase the fastest growth in technology. Cursor, among the most popular AI coding tools, reached an annual revenue of about $ 300 million in April and allegedly collecting new funds on an $ 9 billion evaluation.
Now, wants a piece of openi pie. Chatgpt manufacturer allegedly Closed on a deal to get windsurfDeveloper behind another popular AI coding platform for $ 3 billion. The launch of Codex very clearly shows that Openai is building its own AI coding tools, in addition.
Users accessible to Codex can find a tool in the chat sidebar, and by typing a prompt and clicking on the “Code” button, agents can assign new coding tasks. Users can also ask questions about their codebase and click on the “Ask” button. Below the prompting bar, users can see other functions that they have assigned to Codex, and monitored their progress.
Before the launch of Codex, in a briefing, Openai’s agents research lead, Josh Tobin, told Techcrunch that the company eventually wants its AI coding agents to act as a “virtual team peers”, which authentically completes the tasks that take the works that human engineers take “hours or even days”. Openai claims that it is already using Codex to unload repetitive functions, scaffolding new features and draft documentation.

Openai product lead lead Alexander Embiricos says that a lot of safety work for the company’s O3 model also applies to Codex. In a blog post, Openai says that Codex will refuse requests to develop “malicious software”. In addition, Codex operates in an air-gapped environment, with no access to comprehensive internet or external API. It is limited how dangerous Codex can be in the hands of a bad actor – but it can also interrupt its utility.
It is worth noting that the AI coding agent, today, like all generic AI systems, are prone to mistakes. A recent study by Microsoft found that industries-agni AI coding models, such as Cloud 3.7 Sonnet and O3-Min, struggle firmly for debug software. However, it does not reduce the stimulation of the investor in these devices.
Openai is also updating the Codex CLI, the company’s recently launched open source coding agent that runs in your terminal, with a version of its O4-Min model adapted for software engineering. This model is now default in Codex CLI, and will be available for $ 1.50 per 1m input tokens (about 750,000 words, more than the entire Lord of the Rings Book Series) and $ 6 per 1M output tokens in API of Open
In addition to the latest efforts of Codex’s launch marks OpenaiI, apart from notorious chatbott to beef to beef with additional products. In the previous year, Openai has provided the company’s AI video platform, Sora, its research agent, deep research, as well as its web browsing agent, operator as a profit to customers.
These offerings can be wooed up to more users to sign up to a chatgpt subscription, and, in terms of Codex, especially, celebrates existing customers to pay more money for increased rate limits.
