“Organizing a major international conference is an important service for the scientific community,” says Associate Professor Proctor. A primary inspiration to bring Interspeech 2026 to Sydney was to highlight Australia’s rich multilingual landscape and to resume industries on speeches and all its diversity to speech researchers and industry energy. These subjects guided the dialect development and echoed with the International Speech Science Community.
“There is a long tradition of excellence in speech research in Australia, but in 2008, I have been hosted once in Brisbane once before. Since then, Australia has developed and diverse in one of the most multilingual countries in the world, with new language varieties emerging in our vibrant cities,” said the Associate Professor Proctor.

Associate Professor Proctor says, “Although I have previously been involved in the organization of small scientific meetings, this is the first time I have been part of a team bidding for a major international conference.”
