Google is preparing to bring YouTube into the iOS device, which is about two years after the video editing app specially launched on Android. The job listing reviewed by Techcrunch shows that the company is actively hiring engineers in India for the iOS development project.
job postings The show Google is recruiting software engineers in Bangalore to create a special iOS version. The original Android app started in September 2023 in the US and seven other markets, then expanded 13 more markets by February 2024.
YouTube create provides free mobile video editing tool designed for content creators, providing features such as stickers, gifs and effects for both YouTube shorts and long -term videos. Google developed the app after consulting with 3,000 creators to ensure that it meets their needs.
Application is Google’s attempt to compete with the popular Capcut editor of Buyeds. But exclusive sensor tower data shared with Techcrunch shows that YouTube Create Capcut and another established competitive, is far behind Inshot.
The competition is also not close. In the second quarter of this year, Capcut and Inshot have been downloaded 66 million and 21 million times on Android devices respectively. In contrast, YouTube Create has seen less than 500,000 downloads in this quarter, and there are only 4 million downloads since its launch.
The difference of user engagement is even more pronounced. Capcut Q2 claims more than 442 million monthly active users on the Android app, while Inshot claims 92 million. YouTube is far behind with less than a million monthly active users.

On iOS – Create the platform YouTube is now targeting – the competition is simply fierce. Capcut Q2 goes with 194 million monthly active users, followed by 25 million. Meanwhile, the editing of Capcut and Instagram dominated the iOS download this quarter with 28 million and 7 million downloads respectively.
Despite the lagging in numbers, YouTube create shows some speed, with a 28% year-year increase in monthly active users in Q2, a 9% increase for Capcut and 7% declines for Inshot according to sensor tower data.
Abe Yosef, a senior insight analyst at the censor tower, said, “Claiming the growth of a solid user on a year-on-year basis, Youtube Create has struggled to live with some big, more established colleagues like Capcut, later the number of monthly active users is more than 10x.”
YouTube Create can build a more loyal user base, yousef suggested. Increasing active user numbers with a decline in downloads may indicate that people who tried the first app are returning to use it regularly.
“Capcut is coming out many years ago, coupled with the fact that it is basically integrated with its sister app, tiktok, possibly plays in this material size difference with YouTube Create,” Yousef said.
Nevertheless, YouTube Create is facing some retention issues. Its 90-day retention rate-the percentage of users who downloaded the app and still use it after 90 days-Q1 had about 1% in Q1, which was 7% of Capkat and below 4% of Inshot.
The engagement metrics also highlight the difference. Users Capcut spend an average of 38 minutes per month at YouTube Create compared to 62 minutes for Capcut users. Capcut users also open the app more often, an average of 23 sessions monthly vs 11 for YouTube Create.
Geographically, the user base of YouTube Create is diverse. India represented 67% of the total monthly active users at YouTube Create in the second quarter of last year, but the stock has fallen to 51% in this quarter as the app has received traction elsewhere. Nevertheless, Youtube Create appears to be to stick in India, the daily-to-masic active user ratio has been improving up to 12% this year from 9% last year, so far this year.
In addition to India, Indonesia has emerged as the second largest market in YouTube Create, representing 21% of its global monthly active users. Germany (5%), Brazil (4%), and UK (3%) exit top markets.
The app is showing a particularly strong growth in many other markets, as well as an increase of 119% monthly active user in Spain, 91% in South Korea, 89% in France and 71% in Singapore.
“A iOS release of YouTube Create can fully help the platform to increase its market share, although other social media-supported video editing platforms and native video editors have terrible competition in space,” said “Yousef.
