In the old way, Links to your Discover feed surfaces link articles google feels that you are interested in. The setup is very straightforward, the article is clearly displayed with the source and has a link to read beyond the headline.
The aim of the new way is to keep you within the Google app, showing the AI-manual summary of the story drawn simultaneously from many sources. In addition to traffic concerns, Google’s AI overviews in search are not always reliable, so there is a worry about whether the news summary will be better fare. As Google continues to plug AI to every comprehensible place, however, we will probably continue to see more such features.
