How to use GPT-5 in VS code with Gthub Copilot

    Key takeaways of zdnet

    • Github Copilot Pro now supports GPT-5 in VS code.
    • The 30-day test lets you test the premium model for free.
    • Add your OPENAI key to bypass Copilot ban.

GPT-5 is now available for use with Github Copilot of Microsoft in VS code. In this article, I will let you walk through the stages of establishing a relationship between VS Code, Copilot and GPT -5. This process will also work for most other supported large language models you use.

Also: Microsoft rolls GPT -5 in its Copilot Suite – here you will find it

Step 1: Enable Github Copilot Pro

You will currently need a Pro version of Github Copilot to use GPT-5. The new model may be available for Copilot’s free tier someday, but not yet. However, there is a 30-day free test. I will show you how to set it here:

First, open the VS code. Click on Little Copilot icon (1). That verb will open the Kopilot Phalak. Next, whatever is listed on the model (2), click. My GPT-4.1 is. Finally, click adding the premium model (3).

Also: I tested the coding skills of GPT-5, and it was so bad that I am sticking with GPT-4O (for now)

This will take you to a web page, where you will be given the opportunity to try Copilot Pro for 30 days without any cost. Click on the Big Green button.

Unfortunately, you have to add your credit card information, although it will not be charged for 30 days. To prevent misuse of 30-day limit, Microsoft needs you to give your personal information and your credit card number:

Once you do this, now click on the activation button:

    Step 2: Enable GPT-5

You have to restart the VS code for the Pro Mode to be provided. Once you do this, click on the current model (in the screenshot, it is GPT-4.1), and then scroll and choose GPT-5:

Then you will need to release a signal. In my deep research in my repository, I was told about some references of the product sold a few years ago that were still in the code of the product. I asked GPT-5 to remove all such references.

The competent button was shown as a result of that process. Originally, I think you can use any signal with GPT-5 to trigger the competent button. Then click it:

Step 3: Bring your own key

By using a Pro account, you are given in a certain number that you can use different models. It is not clear how the limit of that use is calculated, so I have reached Microsoft for clarification. When I get more information, I will update this article.

Also: How do I test the coding ability of AI Chatbot – and you can also do

If you want to bypass potential restrictions and rate limits, you can use your API key provided by your LLM service. You can learn more Microsoft’s language model page,

With chatgpt, you can get an Openai platform key by pointing to your browser HereIf you do not already have an Openai account, you may also need to give them some credit card information. After this click on Create Chey and follow the instructions:

Once you have your key, go back to manage the model (by clicking on the current model you are using and choosing managed models). Select Openai:

Type or paste in your key. Press Enter to confirm:

Congratulations, now you are running GPT-5 in Copilot.

    Have you used Copilot?

Have you tried to use GPT-4.1 or GPT-5 in VS code so far? What do you think about the Copilot Pro Experience so far? Does it look like a meaningful upgradation? Have you detected using your API key instead of relying on the allocation of Microsoft?
