I used to struggle while shopping for a new computer. Over time, I learned to narrow things, which I call “display triafecta” – three main components you should take care when buying a laptop or desktop: processor, storage drive and RAM. The first two are very easy to detect. A good processor ensures that a computer performs well, and a lot of local storage means that you will have a lot of space for all your files.

Memory is a component that I do not think many people understand or pay attention (I was definitely a part of this group). RAM, or random access memory, is essentially a short -term memory of a computer. Instead of saving the data directly on SSD, the computer temporarily stores files in RAM for quick access. In this way, the device will not need to use its storage to open documents or software resources, which ensures rapid performance.
There is a lot of information about RAM and different opinions and how much you need on your computer. Should you choose a laptop option with 32GB LPDDR5X RAM, or will 16GB be sufficient? I am cutting through all the fog here and providing an easy understanding advice on the amount of memory you receive.
How much RAM do you need in 2025?
Brief Answer: It depends on the operating system. For Windows machines, 16GB RAM has become minimum operations on new consumer laptops. Modern workload ramps to such an extent that low RAM on Windows device is fine, but it will be limited to everyday tasks like writing email, internet browsing or youtube videos.
But here must be real: the average worker is probably running dozens of tabs in their browser, a handful of apps in the background, and (possibly) generic AI, who all demand memory power. In this sense, most people using their Windows laptops for work want a smooth user experience at least 16 GB (for the price-driven, future-proof option).

When it comes to MacBook, things are slightly different. Because Apple’s machines are so adapted to handle the daily workflows, 8GB RAM goes slightly ahead of a stock laptop running windows. In fact, it was not only recently that Apple made 16GB an initial point with the new MacBook Air M4.
McBooks with 8GB are still solid machines for daily use, while more powerful models such as MacBook Pro and MacBook Pro Max provide adequate strength with 24GB, 36GB, or more, making them some of the most powerful laptops (and some of some) in the market.
In addition to Windows and Mac, Chromebooks are a third category of consumer laptops, which has seen a spike in popularity due to its average low price and light operating system: Chromeos over the years.
Because Chromeos is very well -organized, chomebooks can recover with 8GB or less, making them work out of the browser and can become great machines to handle the basic performance with a display and lower price of their Google suits on their fingers. However, the trade-off is that you will have less access to apps that you will otherwise find on Windows.

Overall, it is true to say that the more memory you have, the better your computer should perform. But having too much RAM can also lead to a poor return on investment because you spend money on a resource that you rarely use it to the entire extent. It is like a large house owner, but is using only a few rooms.
When purchasing a new laptop, I just recommend to have a clear understanding of what you want to use – in this way you can expect a realistic expectation of how much RAM you need.
What does DDR5 mean?
Sometimes, while shopping for a computer, you will see the letter “DDR” after a number. It is a brief name that stands for “double data rate”. Without a lot of depth in weeds, DDR is a type of technique that improves data transfer speeds from RAM to other components such as processors. There have been five main DDR generations so far with the latest and fastest standard DDR5.

Similar to 16GB of memory, DDR technology has effectively become the new standard for RAM as users demand rapid speed. There are also variations of technology. A remarkable version is LPDDR5X, which stands for the low-power double data rate 5X, which is a more energy-efficient version of DDR5 specifically designed for mobile devices.
Do not expect DDR6 RAM you will ever have to be released for computer. When should you upgrade?
For most cases 16GB is fine, although if you are a gamer or creative professional, you should consider the option for 32GB RAM. More RAM will ensure that the games you play and the video-editing app you use for work are more smoothly operating. I have that amount for my personal computer, and I am very happy with that setup because I just don’t write.
I also play games on my desktop, edit photos and videos, and run virtual machines with other things. It is a heavy charge that requires the correct amount of resources to operate; Nevertheless, I am considering upgrading my PC. It is not uncommon for me to see my workload for more than 70% of the total RAM of my computer.

As long as you are not a specific type of user, I consider anything above 32GB memory. If you are editing 8K videos or running heavy apps together, you will probably need 48GB or 64GB RAM.
