What was your day work or primary business when you started your side hustle?
Before starting Penny linA new-oriented surepoint store offered hand-painted canvas, accessories and more, I was a full-time impressive man running my blog, covering the hideouts. I started a blog in 2013, but I took Penny Lynn full -time about a year before starting. Managing the blog, I had a corporate career in Major League baseball, where I worked in the social media team for more than five years.

When did you start your side, and where did you get inspiration for it?
I initially learned to stitch from my grandmother, who inspired the name of the business, and then I actually joined college at Kentaki University. I re -raised it in 2018 when I started sewing a custom belt for my father and husband, and a ring bear pillow for my wedding in 2019. A little I knew that it would be the perfect hobby who fell in love with the epidemic along with coming back in love.

As I returned to sewing, I quickly stitching my canvas through my stand and disappointed with both in-traditions and online suaPoint shopping experiences. It felt ancient; There were not many sites with a good user experience, a handful of shops called you to order, and the design felt very mature. I found myself that there were more fun and better accessories and canvas, so I started making them after my search was reduced.

What were some of the first steps you take to remove your side from the ground? How much money/investment was made in launching?
When I began to portray my own canvas, I was not even in the mindset of starting a business; It was still just a hobby for me. I probably spent to buy an empty canvas on Etsy under $ 100 and buy paint in Michaels, and painted the notorious Ralph’s coffee cup for myself. When I shared it on my Instagram, I had a large number of followers to buy one, so I knew that my followers were also interested in the needle.

As I began searching for cuters for myself, I found that many custom items had 100-utum minimum. At that time, I had a business bank account for my blog, so I used the money to order inventory and knew that I could sell at least 90 to my followers who had also done the needle. After making some canvas and looking at the demand, I realized that I have enough ideas to launch a large collection online. So I bought the smallest Shopify package, began to source the needleminder and project bag, and admitted to help my friends and family to help in paint canvas.

Overall, I spent an additional $ 2,000 on the initial inventory for my luggage and an additional $ 2,000 on shipping materials, canvas tape, etc., but none of it was responsible for portraying the canvas one by one for my time, which was the biggest investment.

If you can go back to your professional journey and change a process or approach, what would it be, and how do you want you to do it in a different way?
Given how I made my business, this is a catch -22; If I knew what I know today, I must have done it differently. However, having my hands in every aspect of business has made me a great deal of knowledge and praise that shapes the business.

In the beginning, I handed over almost every canvas, which took many, several hours, but it keeps the cost low because my labor was essentially independent and gave me control of my list. If I knew that people had outsourced the painting, it would have saved me so much time and energy, but by doing so I was taught the value of hand -painted canvas.

Similarly, I want me to hire people in the beginning to take my plate more, but by doing all this, I learned valuable lessons and knew how I wanted to run every aspect of business. I don’t think Penny Lynn would be such a thoughtful and impressive brand today if I did not initially had my fingers on every aspect of business.

Related: I interviewed 5 entrepreneurs arising up to $ 20 million in revenue in a year – and they all have the same regret about starting their business.

When it comes to this specific business, you should be particularly challenging and/or surprising that people who come in this type of work should be prepared, but not the possibility?
Penny Linen has been so successful as a business, and also in reviving cultural love for a needle, it is that we bring very important innovations in the industry. I never expected the amount of pushbacks from vendors and industry weights. Across the board, people pushed our thoughts back and how we run our business.

Today, we have found companions who believe in our development and are building with us. When we launched our acrylic line in 2022, it was so nonsense online that it was not innovative or unique, but today we keep a patent for design, and it is one of our bestseling lines. We also take a slightly smaller wholesale margin than the industry standard as I believe in making the needle -spoint accessible. Our wholesale partners were initially adamant that it would not succeed, but it has been proved otherwise. I developed a thick skin during blogging and learned to stop the noise, which chased me in Penny Lynn because we keep shaking the industry.

Can you miss a specific example when something went very wrong? How did you fix it?
I clearly recall one of our first bag launch, which did not go according to the plan. It was a beautiful project bag with leather and PVC that we sold so soon! As I was packing them, I tested some zippers and it was very disappointed to know that they got stuck despite fully working samples and it was difficult to open them. I reached every customer who ordered them and told them that the bags were not even our standards. If they want to return the bag or exemption, I offered them full refunds, if they want to keep it.

It became one of my biggest rules in business: When anything goes wrong, I need to take ownership and work to fix it immediately. Our community used to appreciate how active we were, and most of the bags were finished. We have placed the rest of the bags on clearance and now work with our team and vendors to ensure that we have quality control measures.

How long did you take to see continuous monthly revenue? How much did the side hustle earn?
In the first six months after being launched, the only consistent revenue we produced during the launch. Everything will be sold so soon that we will not have any inventory left till the next launch. We have often a permanent way to run a business without sales between launch. To prevent this, we started production of more inventory and introduced our Penny Lynn Collective, allowing us to bring us designers who expanded our offerings. Our designers have been fruitful for us in the last five years, and we still increase it today.

We started seeing more consistent revenue in the year two, which was more than $ 30,000 per month. The popularity of our launch began, and we can predict better inventory to keep our income stable. It was a big thing for us to reach these numbers at that time, but now we do it in a day. Each year demand is greatly varying in terms of demand, and in almost every six months, we reach a divine point where we need to increase the amount even more.

What does development and revenue now look like?
It is really exciting that Penny Lynn is doubled or three times every year. In 2024, we raised $ 4.4 million in revenue, and we have already crossed it and are on track to double it in 2025. We are currently an average of $ 570,000 per month. Whatever I think we can have a roof, we come in it every year and double it. Our growth has been so explosive that I hope that it starts completing it next year or after, but there is still so much opportunity for business.

My brain is always running with new ideas for the brand because we expand our product offer, launch new designers under Penny Linen Collectorate and bring new items to the market. Norwalk, our store opening in connecticut, was a huge milestone for us earlier this year, and now we are knowing what more stores can look. I never see our growth slow.

What do you enjoy the most in running this business?
I love honestly what I do and get great fulfillment in it. I think I am thinking about the great pride, enthusiasm and happiness about what we have created in Penny Lynn and the business I have made in five years. This is nothing that I could ever imagine as my career or I expected that Penny was expected to develop in Linen. We have not yet seen many bumps in the road, and achieve success after success, which inspires me to walk.

I proud myself that Penny Lynn is “by a stitch”, “and want something in my collection and to be able to make it. There is nothing more satisfactory as a supepointer to be able to make it. I have got the ability to have the ability to work with my vendors to make my dream products, and how much is our community love to see.

I am also very happy in the change that we have brought to the industry and how we are able to bring the needle to a new generation at the forefront. It is crazy to sit back and think that my brand has revived a centuries -old tradition and made it something that will continue to live and develop for generations to come.

Related: These friends started a side -uproar in their kitchen. Sales increased to $ 130,000 in 3 days – then 7 figures: ‘Revenue has increased continuously.’

What is your best business advice?
The first is, “If you don’t ask, the answer is not always.” People are often afraid to reach out because they are afraid of rejection, but my motto is always to ask, and if they do not answer, it is still not. If they do not respond, it is not the end of the world, but the opportunity to answer yes is so high.

My second is to learn the difference between creative response and criticism. If no one likes you or your business, nothing will ever be good to say them, and it is not worth listening. However, if they are a loyal fan and frequent shopkeepers, and they comment on how to improve a product or process, it is worth listening. It is easy to lose in negative response, but the faster you learn as to what is worth listening, there will be better decisions for your business.
