Google’s NotebookLM is one of our favorite AI tools, thanks to its organizational features and workflow improvements. However, one of the weaknesses of the tool so far has been that users have not been able to control how the integrated chatbot communicates and organizes their workflow documents.

one in blog post Published on Wednesday, Google said users can now customize chats to adopt a specific role, voice or goal to further improve their experience.

Users can click the configuration icon in the chat feature and specify how they want their chats to behave. Google’s examples include asking Chat to treat the user like a PhD candidate, asking probing questions and identifying shortcomings in the user’s reasoning, asking Chat to analyze the information provided from three different perspectives.
Once your chat preference is set, it remains for the duration of your exchange. This feature should provide more satisfactory results and a deeper understanding of the content provided.

Google also announced expansions to NotebookLM’s processing capabilities, conversation context, and history. Gemini’s 1 million token reference window is now available on NotebookLM across all plans. Google said multiturn conversation capabilities are now more than six times larger, providing more relevant results over longer conversations.

Users can also enjoy saved chat history, which is another long-awaited feature. Google said that saved chats will help users complete long-term projects, allowing them to close a session and open it later without losing the history. In the shared notebook, only you can see your chat history.

Google said all of these upgrades will roll out to all users over the next week, regardless of their NotebookLM subscription.
