As a computer scientist, who has been immersed in AI morality for almost a decade, I have seen for the first time how this area has developed. Today, the increasing number of engineers detects itself to develop AI solutions by navigating complex moral ideas. Beyond technical expertise, the responsible AI finesion requires a fine understanding of moral implications.
In my role as IBM’s AI Ethics Global Leader, I have seen a significant change of how AI engineers should work. They are no longer talking to other AI engineers how to produce technology. Now they need to join with those who understand how their compositions will affect communities using these services. Many years ago in IBM, we admitted that AI engineers need to include additional steps in both technical and administrative development process. We created a playbook providing the right tools for testing issues such as bias and privacy. But it is important to understand how to use these devices properly. For example, AIs have many different definitions of fairness. To determine which definition is applied, requires consultation with the affected community, customers and final users.

Education plays an important role in this process. When AI operates our AI Ethics Playbook with engineering teams, a team believed that their project was free from concerns as it did not include preserved variables such as races or gender. They did not realize that other characteristics, such as zip code, could serve as a prolific proxy for protected variables. Engineers sometimes believe that technical problems can be solved with technical solutions. While software tools are useful, they are just beginning. The more and more challenge lies in learning to communicate and cooperate effectively with various stakeholders.
The pressure to release new AI products and equipment can create stress with a complete moral evaluation. This is the reason why we established Centralized AI Ethics rule through the AI Ethics Board in IBM. Often, individual project teams face time limit and quarterly results, making them difficult to consider the reputation or comprehensive impacts on the customer trust. Principles and internal processes should be centralized. Our customers- other companies- demand solutions to respect some values. Additionally, in some areas, rules now make moral ideas mandatory. Even major AI conferences require papers to discuss the moral implications of research, AI researchers are pushed to consider the impact of their work.
In IBM, we started by developing equipment centered on major issues like we Secrecy, Clarity, FairnessAnd transparency. For every concern, we created an open-source tool kit with code guidelines and tutorials, helping engineers effectively apply. But as technology develops, there are moral challenges. For example, with generous AI, we face new concerns about hallucinations with potential aggressive or violent materials. As part of IBM’s family Granite modelWe have developed Safety model This evaluates both input signals and outputs for issues such as factual and harmful materials. These model abilities serve both our internal needs and our customers.
While software tools are useful, they are just beginning. More and more challenge lies in learning to communicate and cooperate effectively.
The company’s governance structures should be sufficient to adapt to technological development. We constantly assess how new development like generative AI and agent AI can increase or reduce some risks. When issuing models as an open source, we evaluate whether it introduces new risks and what safety measures are required.
To increase moral red flags for AI solutions, we have an internal review process that can lead to modifications. Our evaluation is beyond the properties of technology (fairness, clarity, privacy) how it is deployed. Deployment can either respect human dignity and agency or weaken it. We evaluate risk for each technology use case, assuming that understanding the risk requires knowledge of the reference in which the technology will operate. It aligns with approach European AI ActThe structure of – is not that generative AI or machine learning is naturally risky, but some landscapes may be high or low risk. High -risk use cases demand additional investigation.
In this rapidly developed landscape, responsible AI engineering requires the ongoing vigilance, adaptability and a commitment to the moral principles that hold human welfare at the center of technological innovation.
