Popular language-teaching app Duullingo has determined to become a “AI-first” company with a plan to originally change its hiring policies in the name of productivity and scale.

“When this big shift is done, the worst thing you can do can wait,” Von Ahan wrote, in 2012, citing the company’s successful forward-curbing stakes on mobile, as proof of the early adoption can be a huge award. “Betting on mobile made all the differences. We are now making a similar call, and this time the platform shift AI,” he continued.
For von Ahan, adoption of AI is not optional, but something is necessary for the mission of Duullingo. “To teach well, we need to make large amounts of materials, and need to do so that is not manually on scale,” they explain.
“We replaced one of the recently the best decisions made with a slow, manual content creation process with one run by AI. Without AI, it will take us decades to scale our content for more learners. We give it it to our learners to get this content.”
All changes
As a result, the memo represents an edit of how employees should think about artificial intelligence.
The task “that AI can handle” which is currently cultivated for contractors, will be phased, and the use of artificial intelligence will become a metric in hiring and performance review processes.
Additionally, teams will not be allowed to increase their employee headcounts if they can automate more charge, and “most tasks will be specific to change how they work”.
Duoolingo is not the first company to see AI as a worthy change of changing employment practices. Earlier this month, Shopify CEO Toby Lutke publicly shared a similar memo, which they sent, revealing that teams would have to prove that a job cannot be automated before approved any new fare. It is likely to be a trend that we see in the next few months, and last month, Bill Gates predicted that almost every job would eventually be replaced by AI.

Despite the greater replacement of human labor with artificial intelligence, von ego writes that the business will be “a company that cares deeply about its employees”. These steps are not about “replacing Duos with AI”, von Ahan emphasizes, but “a means of removing hurdles so that we can already do more with the outstanding duos.”
In 2012, the condition of going on mobile was a courageous which proved to be correct. As a van ego note, Duullingo proceeded to win Apple’s iPhone App of the Year Award in 2013, and later took the brand to the next level promoted in users. All the same, uniform big bets on AI when it is still prone to shameful errors and hallucinations, it is a great gambling – especially if there are less humans to see mistakes.
Keeping this in mind, a line from the memo can eventually be cited uncontrollably in the future: “We cannot wait until the technique is 100% right. We will move forward with urgency and gradually take small hits and remember the moment.”
