- Google says that my device is coming soon
- 4X speed has increased since last year
- The test reflects some problems with testing coverage
Google gave an important upgrade to Android Find My device network last year, with better support for third-party trackers and offline space access, and it seems that another important update is almost here.
Talk to RuckusAndroid product manager Angela Hasiao said that support for Ultra Wide-Band (UWB) technology would be “very soon” to find my device, which essentially enables the more accurate form of tracking.
If you are using a UWB-competent device to detect another UWB-competent device- searching an Airtag with the iPhone in the Apple ecosystem- you are directed to almost the right place. You would know that the Lost Gadget is behind the couch, not only inside your house, for example.
Earlier this month, hidden signals in the code for Find My device suggested that the UWB may be supported soon, and it seems that a launch is now adjacent. We know that Google I/O 2025 is running on 20 May, and we can hear more about UWB.
Speed requirement
The Kagra also conducted some very comprehensive tests of the current status of the Find My device network. Google’s technique now performs with Apple as well as equivalent, but only with a lot of activities in busy areas (and passing the gadget to detect lost objects).
In more remote areas, coverage and tracking time seems less than optimal, although it varies depending on the tracker and specific landscapes. Keep in mind that Google does not yet have its own brand version of Apple Airtags, although there are rumors that some works may be done.
Depending on Google’s internal test, HSIAO says, the network is capable of detecting those items when it was rolled out to the major upgrade of 2024, it could be better – so it is getting better, even though it has not yet been enough for Apple.
To work UWB, you also require a phone with technology when finding something, but a lot of best Android phones now come with technology on board (including Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra and Google Pixel 9 Pro).
