WhatsApp user will start watching advertisements on the app, thanks to a new global update.
As Meta news roomThe advertisements will only appear in the “updates” tabs – a separate tab under the app, which displays both “channels” and “status” features. Users can take membership of friends and other public channels, and post their own status, for Instagram membership and “stories” features.
Meta said, “The update tab is the place where you find something new on WhatsApp – whether it is a friend’s position from their wedding day or a manufacturer’s entertaining channel – and now it is now used globally by 1.5 billion people per day.”
“Now the update tab channel is going to be able to help and grow in admins, organizations and businesses.”
Today, @WhatsApp is presenting new features in the update tab (such as channel subscriptions, promoted channels and advertising positions) without changing anything about their personal chat (they live until the end to finish encrypted). https://t.co/agscs7n1o6June 16, 2025
WhatsApp will present advertisement in three ways on update tab: through channel subscription, in promoted channels and advertising positions. Channel subscriptions will work similar to the material paid on Instagram, allowing users to subscribe to their favorite public channels and get special updates for monthly fee. In the context of promoted channels, businesses will be able to pay new users to promote their visibility.
Business status updates can also advertise products and services, when clicked audiences can connect with a chat.
How will advertisement actually work on WhatsApp?
WhatsApp will target advertisements in a similar manner as Facebook and Instagram; However, it seems that these third-party advertising users will infiltrate less for user experience. The meta notes that users’ messages, calls and status “end-to-end encrypted, meaning that one can see or hear them”-including a platform-and if you do not use the update tab, you will not even see advertisements.
WhatsApp advertisements will be targeted towards users on the basis of their age, country or city, which they are located and in language. Ads will also be targeted based on the channels that they are following in the app and how they interact with Ads.
Users who have chosen their WhatsApp account to link to the Meta account center hub, their advertising preferences and their meta accounts will have information.
Meta will be rolling these facilities in the coming months and is already calling businesses and channel admins to take early adoption of new features. As always, we will keep updating you how it gets out for WhatsApp users-and will these advertisements be non-aggressive in the long run.
