Most people tracking their health today have only scattered clues. His smartwatch tells the sleep duration. A fitness app logs steps. A nutrition app counts calories. Yet some tools help people understand how it all fits together.

BendOne New York-based startup believes it’s the missing piece in the shift toward active health. The company has raised a $10 million Series A from General Catalyst to scale its AI health companion, which integrates data from wearables and daily habits related to sleep, fitness and nutrition into personalized insights.

The investment follows a breakout year for the two-year-old health tech company.

Bevel says it has grown more than eightfold within the last year and has now reached more than 100,000 daily active users, making it one of the fastest growing health apps in the US. The company also adds that the average user opens the app eight times per day, and retention at 90 days remains above 80%, a rare number in a category where people often churn after reaching a short-term fitness goal.

“We consider health not a phase, but an ongoing journey,” said the co-founder and CEO. gray nguyen In an interview with TechCrunch. “Bevel meets you where you are, learns from your habits, and helps you make small changes over time.”

But with so many health companion brands out there, from Whoop to Ora and At Sleep, why does the world need another brand?

According to Co-Founder and Board Member Aditya AgarwalMany of these health apps rely on associated hardware devices that customers must purchase and maintain. Because such devices can be expensive, there is an opportunity to create a product that is entirely software-based, allowing people to use wearables they already have.

“A $500 ring or band is out of reach for a lot of people,” Agarwal said. “We already generate a lot of valuable health data from our primary wearable devices and other everyday sources. We wanted to create something that was more accessible to a larger group of people.” Bevel users pay $6 monthly or $50 annually.

Unlike typical wellness apps that focus on a single area like steps, sleep, or nutrition, Bevel combines them into one experience. It integrates with the Apple Watch and other popular wearables through Apple Health and syncs directly with continuous glucose monitors like Dexcom and Libre. Additional Garmin integrations are in development, the company said.

All this information feeds into the company’s core software, Bevel Intelligence, which helps analyze key information and customize recommendations for each user, learning how their body reacts to stress, movement or nutrition.

Bevel’s story truly began with pain.

Before launching the company in late 2023, Nguyen, who previously led products at the Sam Altman-backed Campus, and was co-founder/CTO ben yangWorking on machine learning at Opendoor, building stablecoin infrastructure for enterprises. The demanding nature of startup life caused Nguyen to take little care of her health, leading to severe back pain that went undiagnosed for months despite using wearables and seeing doctors regularly.

“Nobody explained what exactly was causing my back pain, not even my doctors, which is crazy, right?” He said. “That’s when this idea came about. Everyone’s life is very subtle. There are lots of little things you do that add up to each other and lead to a chronic condition over time.”

Nguyen says she began piecing together her health data, tracking sleep, nutrition, and steps, and realized that problems in these areas had increased over time. Decreased mobility from sitting for too long, sleep problems caused by her mattress arrangement, and a sodium-heavy diet that increased inflammation all played a role.

Similarly, Agarwal, former CTO of Dropbox and early engineer at Facebook, had gone through a recovery in his health after years of intense work. Manually logging her data through spreadsheets and connected trackers to recreate her energy helped.

When they approached Ben and Gray about what they were building with Bevel, they saw that they had a similar vision and joined the team.

“We share the same North Star, which is helping people be more intelligent about their health,” said Agarwal, partner at South Park Commons. The venture capital firm, along with General Catalyst, invested $4 million in Bevel earlier this year.

With new capital and no plans to venture into wearables, Bevel intends to grow its team and expand horizontally into more services and partnerships that make active health accessible.

“Bevel’s mission to democratize health through intelligence and design resonates deeply with us,” said Neeraj Arora, Managing Director, General Catalyst. “The level of engagement from users is remarkable, and it has become part of people’s daily lives – not just another app. We’re excited to support this team as they build the future of personal health.”
