Water ice coats many outer solar system bodies – from Jupiter’s icy moon ghanimade (up) to intersteller dust. On Earth, the ice freezes into a clean crystal lattice, but in the deep cold of the space it was considered to make it completely unaccounted (glass) solid. A new study by University College London and Cambridge scientists challenges this picture. Their computer simulation and X-ray tests on cosmic “low-grainity” ice suggests that it actually contains small crystalline grains. In some models, about 20–25% of ice was in the form of crystals, reversing the long-held view that the space ice is completely structural.

    Simulation reveals hidden nanocristal

According For paper, space ice computer simulation showed that it includes nanocristal. In one approach, researchers cools virtual water to -10 -° C at different rates to make models “ice cubes”. Depending on the speed of cooling, the simulated ice was completely ordered partially. The structures with approximately 16–19% molecules in small crystal groups match the best of X-ray data published for low density ice. In another simulation, thousands of nanometer -shaped ice grains were packed together and then the remaining water molecules were random. It produced about 25% crystalline of ice, yet reproduced the known diffraction pattern.

In laboratory experiments, the team also created an ignorance of real low density by vapor statements and soft compression. When these samples were gently heated to crystallizing, the resulting ice showed the “memory” of its formation method.

Implications for the origin of planets and life

The conclusions “give a good idea that the most common form of snow in the universe looks at an atomic level,” which is important for the model of planet and galaxy formation. They also tolerate the principles of life origin. Partly crystalline ice has a low internal space to trap organic molecules, possibly makes it a low efficient vehicle for amino acids or other prebiotics. However, Dr. Davis noted that the pocket of completely unknown ice is still present, so cosmic dust grains and coma ites can disturb organic ingredients in those disorganized areas.
