Streaming introduced many new entertainment options and, most importantly, unique convenience. These days, Netflix is just one of many platforms that offers a surprising amount of titles to choose from – and yet, there’s more than meets the eye.

That is to say, on Netflix we have many more options than we are accustomed to seeing when we open the app.
Secret Codes’ expanded directory reveals a very broad landscape of content, including some extremely obscure flicks. I was a little disappointed that I couldn’t find a category called “1980s Kung Fu”, but the category called “Martial Arts Movies” (code 8985) found what I was looking for.
How to use Netflix codes on your PC or laptop
There is no sign-up or cost-based entry fee to access and use these secret Netflix codes.
In fact, they are not meant to be hidden secretly. The general Netflix menu we present is an integrated product of multiple algorithms driven by popularity and your personal viewing habits. Using the code just requires a little extra effort, and here’s the fastest way I’ve found for it.

The steps below explain how to access additional categories of Netflix on your Mac, PC, or tablet from the Netflix website.
- On your device, go to netflix website And log in.
- Open in another browser window what’s on netflix,
- In the prompt on your first tab, enter: https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/,
- On the What’s on Netflix tab, select your desired code, and place it at the end of the URL. For example, the “fantasy anime” subgenre code is 11146, so I changed the URL to read: https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/11146,
- Choose your title from the selection there and click play.
There are also some browser extensions that can enhance your online experience and provide access to hidden menus:
Upon installing any of these extensions, you will get a new drop-down menu or Browse All option on your Netflix home screen. In total, you will have thousands of alphabetical categories to peruse.
How to use Netflix codes from your phone
While some claim that you can enter the code directly into the search bar on the Netflix app, conflicting reports suggest that this doesn’t always work. The best way to use the Netflix secret code is through a web browser, as shown above – assuming you’re logged into your account. By entering the code in the search bar on the Netflix website, you can access the category you are looking for.

Then, once you’ve identified the movie or show you want to watch, add it to your queue and find it on the app. To do this, tap My List, then go to TV Shows & Movies to see your selections. Finally, although you may not be able to use the codes directly on the Netflix app, you can still use them to discover new content and watch it later on the app.
How many movies do Netflix codes unlock?
With over 4,100 different codes to date, I wish I could tell you exactly how many titles this equates to, but that figure fluctuates depending on the region you live in. Best estimates suggest that the US catalog includes more than 6,700 titles (movies and series) – more than 50 percent of which are Netflix Originals.
For example, in a category called “Classic action and adventure films” (code 46576), you’ll only find three movies listed, one of which is Apollo 13. I’m surprised to find that the 1995 Oscar-winning film is listed along with two movies that barely made it to the small screen. Meanwhile, the broader “Action & Adventure” (code 1365) genre on Netflix includes about 660 titles.
Your possibilities for exploration depend on the keywords you use to search the index. I can’t explain the logic behind Netflix’s codification of movies, but I don’t mind knowing that Apollo 13 can be listed under at least five major categories.
