
Two Dutch teenage boys of the age of 17, allegedly used hacking devices to spy for Russia, arrested by Politi on Monday.
According to D Telegraph, both of them used a WiFi Snifer device near Europeol and Eurozst offices, as well as Canadian Embassy in Hague.
Bleepingcomputer contacted Europeol to confirm the report, and a spokesperson accepted the incident, given that there are no signs of compromising on the agency’s system.
“We are in close contact with the Dutch authorities about the case. Europeol has a strong security infrastructure, and there is no indication that our system has been compromised. We take our operations and safety of employees very seriously and continue to work with our partners to address any possible risk.” – Europeol spokes.
The boys were admitted to Telegram and were arrested after a tip from the country’s intelligence service, General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD).
De telegraph report One of the boys was arrested as he was completing his homework at home, the parents were completely unaware of their son’s spy activities.
“We pick up our children to prepare them for dangers in life: smoking, evaporation, alcohol and drugs. But not for anything like this. Who will ever understand this risk?” Asked the father of one of the 17 -year -old arrested.
Due to the severity of the allegations, both boys will have to stay in custody for at least two weeks as the investigation continues.
This case marks an increase in cases of lower level recruitment seen elsewhere in Europe, GermanyWhere the youth were paid by Russian agents to perform vandalism and sabotage on important infrastructure.
WiFi snifters are devices that can identify wireless networks by listening to radio signals on WiFi channels, and prevent traffic. The devices are usually used in the reconnaissance phase of an attack.
Russian hackers have demonstrated their ability to remotely exploit the WiFi network reported by Volcity in a 2024 report.
In that case, APT28 State Hackers used the “nearest neighbor attack” to dissolve an American firm through their enterprise WiFi network, taking advantage of a nearby organization within the WiFi range.
