As ZDNET’s MagSafe expert, I’ve tried a number of magnetic accessories, from wallets, grips, and stands to notebooks, battery packs, and beyond. That’s why when one catches my eye or ignores some other thing I’ve tried, I’m writing about it.

There is no shortage of MagSafe wallet options in the market, but UAG Metropolis Wallet It’s worth calling out as an affordable luxury alternative – even outshining other competitors I’ve tried with similar capability, looks and feel.

The UAG wallet is made of vegan leather that is soft and supple. It has a few card slots and a card pocket on the back, as well as a notch at the bottom. There’s a MagSafe side with 2.5mm thick magnets for secure attachment and of course, a built-in kickstand that allows you to use your device in portrait or landscape viewing. I find this style of wallet easiest when removing high traffic cards like the OMNY or NJ Transit SmartLink card.

This is a fairly standard and straightforward wallet and stand combo design available across brands like ESR and others, but I find this option from UAZ even better than Journey’s Azmo Wallet, which I first reviewed in 2024.

Head-to-head: UAZ Metropolis vs Journey AZMO

When I first saw the UAZ Metropolis wallet, I was reminded of its similarity to Journey’s Azmo wallet. If you haven’t heard of it, this is another MagSafe wallet that I reviewed and raved about, it has since become my go-to wallet for daily use. If you are looking at both the options at the top, it is hard to differentiate with almost similar profile, color, form and design.

But there are some differences. The vegan leather on the UAZ Metropolis has a higher texture, and is slightly less shiny. The Azmo, on the other hand, has pockets on both sides of the bifold (unlike the UAZ), and feels a little more elevated, though both are acceptably sleek thanks to the MagSafe accessory. They both lack clear ID windows and are available in limited color options, although the Journey offers three more options than the UAZ.

The real kicker? UAG wallet is $25 less than Journey wallet, Selling for around $45 (Or less if you can catch it on sale).

The UAZ wallet is one of my favorite styles – slim and sleek, yet large enough for cash and knick-knacks – plus it also has a kickstand. And it’s so stylish and functional that you can even pop it off the back of your phone and use it on its own.

The magnet is secure, the stand is stable, and cards are easy to insert and remove, even with the card covers on my two most-used debit cards. And the price? It’s a great value for a more advanced MagSafe option, but not as expensive as other options I’ve tried.

I’m still disappointed to not see any color options other than black and I really like the added touch of a clear ID window on the MagSafe wallet, so I can’t give it perfect marks. But it’s a great option for someone looking for a moderately priced MagSafe wallet that has the feel of a classic wallet.

If you’re looking for a more traditional MagSafe wallet that works as a stand instead of a cardholder or attached wallet like the Benex ArmorGo or OhSnap Grip Wallet, UAG Metropolis Wallet A reasonably priced option.

You get storage for up to 5 cards and some cash, a stand, and an attractive design, but you’ll have to give up other elements like the ID window and more upbeat or neutral colors. Still, for $45 (or less during the sale), if I were looking for an affordable but great black MagSafe wallet I’d buy it. still not sure?
