My two favorite games were growing up The Legend of Zelda: A link to the past and Secret of Maina. Green world, curious – and sometimes cute – enemies, and combat fluid action for time; As someone played only turn-based RPG for the first eight years of his life, the SNES era of action RPG showed me a glimpse of what video games were capable. These games especially made me feel bold and courageous, and whenever I regain him as an adult, they fill me with a child’s feeling.
So I am a very targeting audience for the upcoming action RPG, The Adventures of Elliot: The Millennium Tales. I consider HD-2D, and octopath traveler II is one of my favorite switch games and all time rpgs. But at the same time, I wanted the team Asano and Square Enix to do something different with this beautiful art style; I was a little worried about the direction that was taking it.
Nevertheless, I did not waste any time in downloading the demo after the July partner showcase, and even after spending two hours with it, and after recognizing some kinks, who need to be ironed, the thrill of Elliott feels like a shot in the hand for this beauty style, and I am itching for more.
Earlier, like octopaths, the thrill of Elliot is to re-achieve some of that SNES magic, but in the action department rather than turn-based. Think of the illusion of Gaia, Terranigma, YS III beyond Oasis; All this Ilk top-down Japanese-developed action feeds in RPG history, and it is on the show here. But Zelda love is heavy – after all, the hero of the name is wearing red instead of green, she has a fairy partner, you can throw utensils … It is all here, just with some unique wrinkles.
The world is the best part of the debut demo. The discovery of this small corner of fibilatia (not typo) is too much for me, and gives us some information in the coming times. Of course, the first thing I did was cut off some grass, but while cutting the lawn grass, I ignored my quest marker and went towards a desert area towards the south, where I found the torn walls to remove bombs and shrubs. I found a challenge tomb, which also gave me health growth on the way. Eventually, I stumbled into a cave, which acted like a short dungeon.
There are fighter rooms to clear and some puzzle-platforming classes who forced me to consider the layout of the dungeon; Sleaking some sand dunes was taken to me to the lower floors, but some areas were only accessible except for a few holes. The last dungeon of the demo does something similar with lily pads and switches. All standard accessories, but more fun thanks to your angel partner.
No, Fi is not Navi; She can speak a little bit, but is an essential part of Faai Elliot’s adventure as he comes with the ability to fight enemies, assemble objects. She spends most of the time around you, but you can also move it using the right stick. Alternatively, you can allow him to fly forward, stop, disappear or come back. Or, if you want a little secret of Maina Magic, a friend can include you in some couch co-op and take control of it.
However, Faai’s best assets come from his skills. One of these is a dash that allows you to run at a very fast speed for a limited time, to be faster or cross the crambaling floor. The second is a taunt that is extremely useful to achieve large gaps. This dungeon exploration makes really interesting, simply going beyond walking through caves and corridors and fighting enemies.
This is a similar story with a combat, with some small touch to feel the adventure of Elliot a little unique. The basics are familiar – you have standard and charged attacks, but the variety comes from weapons and upgrade that you can equip and get. With a sword and shield, you start with some bombs and a bow (see the link here?), Although my noodling around the map and an alternative boss inspired me to a new weapon: a series and sickle.
The chain and the sickle rules and my sword were immediately more powerful. A tap and sickle of the ‘X’ button will swing in a wide radius around me. Hold it, and it rotates around the Elliot a short distance, effectively acts as a shield. Charge the sickle, and you can pull the enemies towards you. It is very satisfactory to pull. Except when you manage a large enemy with a club to pull towards you, as it is about it to you on the head.
In fact, there are very high risk-incorporated things, which otherwise made a simple fight which is a bit more attractive. Before I leave the opening town, I bought an accessory that increased my speed slightly, but it also meant that I suffered some extra losses from enemies. The couple with the sickle with the sickle dive into it, and it meant that I was a little more alert on how I took out the big groups of enemies.
Magicite, equivalent gems that increase the state and provide weapons buffer, also come with various help-and-hyir effects. A piece of sword magic increased my base attack power, but at the cost of slowing my shield recovery time. Another allowed the arrow to pierce the enemies, but the damage they did decreased. This meant that I had to weigh my equipment options more carefully and – like the badge in the paper Mario – I also had a set amount that I could equip.
I am not an inhibitor in video games, which probably explains my rusty fighting skills, but in the thrill of Elliot, it is very important to block. There is no dodge, in which it took me a minute to accommodate, but a completely time block sees an enemy and gives you some free hits. For an action RPG, it pays to be patient and thinks through things, especially in boss fights, which are effectively like small riddles. Like many, there are many Zelda bosses, semi-nice weak points that you have to exploit with all your equipment and then strike to win. Both of whom I used to fight were not challenging, but they smiled me.
There are some things that Square Enixes and CletecWorks need to be dismissed, but it is for this demo; The frame rate is slightly inconsistent, out in the open world, things are slightly blurred, and quick menu is not zippy at all. But, as an appealing for the incoming things, this is the perfect beginning to reduce my hunger. Even with the announcement of a new octopath during direct direct, The Adventures of Elliot was a standout review for me, and playing it only by semen it has been cemented as one of my most awaited games for Switch 2 in 2026.
