Gopro’s Anamorphic Lens MOD is eventually available to buy, when the company announced its hero 13 action cam, completed the set of lenses. At the time, the latest version of its best selling camera had the ability to attach the selection of lenses and ND filters. Among all of them, I was the most contradictory by the Anamorphic Lens Mod ($ 130), which was picked as a lens for “professional-level artistic film production”.
Like the rest of Gopro’s HB-series lens, it is easy to remove the base lens of Hero 13 and replace it with a very thick anamorphic lens. (It also comes with the front and rear cap to safely store it when not connected to the camera.)
Given its size, it is worth noting that it may mean that some of your third-party cases and accessories may not be quite wrapped around the body of 13 after the lens is attached. However, it was not particularly not affecting weight distribution when I placed it on my tripod, but I was still careful about how the front glass element was revealed.
Once locked, the hero switchs to 13 suitable camera mode, maximizes settings and accurately calibrates the lens. You still have latitude in video settings, however: you can capture videos up to 60fps up to 5.3K and up to 120fps for slow cinematic views. If you want to go to the city, you can also record GP-log in 10-bits and if you are buying $ 130 accessory, you probably want to do everything that the hero is capable of 13.
Fortunately, this is Gopro, and the company made it very simple for new ones to catch and share usable footage with its most unusual lenses. The hero makes 13 black D-cytures for easy editing, capturing the footage. (D-Skwijing is correcting oval size deformity of your video footage due to anamorphic lens.)
Not only this streamline editing is post-production-it is ready to share after finishing recording-it also means that the video on Hero 13 shows the preview of the preview of it, which also makes the framing easier. The technique that stabilizes the electronic image of the lens Gopro is also compatible with hypersmuth, although the company recommends combining it with a gimbal for smooth footage. If you want complete control, you can shoot in standard lens mode and manually perform D-Skaviz footage in post-production.
And as it is a true anamorphic lens (and not only a very, very wide lens), it can also capture the lens flare, with the enamorphic streak that has become the JJ Abrams Trademark. It helps to show my footage as it came from a cinematic video camera, not with an action camera.
The shortcomings are minor. As I mentioned earlier, I worry about damaging the lens, although it has a hydrophobic, anti-reflex coating. In addition, I got the most attractive opportunity to show the horizontal lens flares that are usually shooting footage or sunset at night. Unfortunately, Hero is not the 13 most competent low-light camera, which means that my efforts to catch the results of cool cityscape traffic production which were slightly shady. For the best footage, broadly, I will maximize the ISO at 800 and shoot in 10-bit mode to expand and overcome as much as possible.
HB-Series anamorphic lens modes are now available for $ 130, while $ 350 HB-Series Lens Collection Bundle includes all three lenses and one ND filter 4-packs.
