The online security act was introduced in the UK on 25 July, requiring age verification check on several sites.
People are turning to the best VPN in an attempt to bypass these age checks and later prominent VPN providers have seen spikes in the sign up – as well as with suspected free VPN.
The law is well intended and age check is designed to protect children and weak internet users from access to harmful materials easily.
However, sensitive data causes serious privacy and cyber security risks to be handed over to the check. The Act has a passionate debate and cyber security experts called it “waiting for disaster”.
The types of sites are angry at the age verification check on whether they are necessary. The Act is still in its early stages, as is the age check, but we have highlighted some major sites where you are likely to face age verification check.
Remarkable example
X
Age verification has come in the social media app X – but it is not easy. Many UK users will get a message, “Due to local laws, we are temporarily restricted to this material until X estimates your age.”

Some users will find that they do not need to verify their age. The accounts created in 2012 or before will be automatically verified, as well as anyone who has already verified his age in the past.
User age verification involves the introduction of ID or live selfie issued by the government. The age of X will then be estimated by X’s AI system, but X says it also uses AU10ticx and personality for non-producers.
However, in our experience, on a free X plan, we could not find a way to complete age verification. It is correlated with something Reports On Reddit that only suggested X premium subscribers, they can verify age. But others suggested that even after taking membership, ID check was required or completely offline.
Reddit is a highly popular forum-based social media site and now employs age verification. Checks were presented on 14 July before the online security act was enacted.
Along with the communities labeled as NSFW (not safe), including alcohol or gambling materials, they will require age verification before accessing.

Personality is the third-party Redit, which is using to verify the age of the user, in which selfies or government IDs are being uploaded.
Reddit says Its uploaded picture is not accessible. The site only stores the status of your verification and the date of birth provided in account construction. It says that a person does not maintain your photo for more than 7 days and does not have access to your reddit data.
a number of Reddit user Concerns have expressed that subredits have been incorrectly affected by age verification investigation and should not have been blocked. Mental health, restraint, addiction, and news reports discussed are some examples given.
BBC reported The post has been blocked about conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.
Spotify
Perhaps the most amazing site or app in this list, music streaming service Spotify appears that age verification has been initiated.

Spotify said The age checks that age is required to reach “some spotify materials and features”. 18+ tagged music videos are an example of this material.
Yoti is using third-party provider Spotify, with facial age estimates and ID verification in place. In its Safety and privacy centerSpotify says that Yoti removes all user data “after completion of age assurance process.”
Users who cannot prove their age, they can find their spotify accounts, will be deactivated and eventually removed.
Xbox
Microsoft has said It is bringing age verification in the Xbox as part of its “UK Online Security Act” and to ensure “age-appropriate experience”.
It also uses Yoti and states that it provides age verification of four forms – age estimates, ID verification, mobile provider check and credit card check.
For age estimates and ID verification, Microsoft says that “the image has been encrypted and removed after use/verification.” To check the mobile provider and credit card, it says that “the information presented is not stored or not shared beyond the initial check.”

For now, the Xbox age verification is optional, but “access to some social characteristics will only be limited to friends if the check is not completed in the beginning of 2026.”
Till your account is verified, you will only be able to use the following facilities with friends:
- Voice and text communication
- Party invites efficiency and sports
- User generated material (including activity feed)
Search for facilities of group and custom clubs will not be available.
Blue sky
The X optional blussky is also asking users to verify their age. It is using the kids of Epic Games to give users an option on verification.
Credit card checks (verified by strip), ID scan (verified by Verif), and face scan (verified by Yoti) are three methods that can verify their age on Britis Blisski.
Blussky has said This will include direct messages for any user to “inaccessible adult-appropriate material” that do not want to verify or are young.
Wire
One of the best encrypted messaging apps, seen as a popular option for WhatsApp, Telegram is a safe messaging service that is implementing age verification check.
Wire privacy policy It suggests that it is offering “alternative” age verification check “to follow regional legal requirements”.
Age check is completed through a facial scan, which runs on your device. Telegram says: “Facial images and biometric data are not uploaded or stored on our server, are not accessible to telegram, and are removed after the age estimates are completed.”

However Telegram says that it can “stool age estimates on its servers and some metadata to” track performance and prevent “misuse.
If the age verification is not completed, some material will be blurred or its reach will be blocked.
Any form of age verification can still be seen as a cyber security risk and can be posted for issues for online privacy. But Telegram does not use any third-party age verification providers and means that there is a significant reduction in risk.
Other cases
This is not a detailed list of websites and apps that now require age verification, but some popular examples. Others who have introduced age verification include discord, grindr and nexus modes.
Wikipedia may also have to start age verification check. However, Wikimedia Foundation is Fighting rulesArguing that they “endanger the global community of Wikipedia and Swayamsevak contributors.”

what happens next?
A petition calling the UK government to cancel the online security act is reaching close to 490,000 signature.
The government has said that it will not cancel the Act and it is unlikely that this petition will do anything, but it shows a layer of opposition and anxiety around the law.
Some people argue that the government has not fully thought or discovered the law through more private age verification options – we are not surprised that the Act does not cover personal data security.
Given the increase in VPN use, people clearly do not feel comfortable to hand over their sensitive personal information.
The Act has inspired important discussions related to online confidentiality and it remains to be seen how they will develop in the coming months.
