Copilot desktop app can be a great tool for answering questions, generating materials and increasing productivity. Microsoft feels that it is so useful that the company has made its AI more accessible through the Ask Copilot feature. I disagree and have disabled it.
What is “Copilot” on the windows?
When you right-click some files (eg text files and images) in the file explorer, you will see Ask Copilot Options appear in the reference menu.
Clicking this will be opened and indicated to the Copilot Desktop app with selected file uploads. For example, you can ask questions, request a summary, and operate all types of file analysis that provides copilot. This is a time-saving feature that allows you to extract information quickly from files, allowing you to interact more efficiently with them.
How to disable “Copilot” on Windows
To remove Ask Copilot Option from the reference menu, you have to turn the Windows Registry. Before you do this, it is important that you learn how to backup and restore the Windows Registry. In this way, if something goes wrong and your computer becomes unusable, you will have a way to restore it in a working position.
Always be careful when editing the registry, as changing the wrong value can cause serious problems.
To disable the Copilot feature, you need to create a registry file. To do this, open the notepad, then copy and paste the text below:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00(HKEY_CURRENT_USER\\Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Shell Extensions\\Blocked)
"{CB3B0003-8088-4EDE-8769-8B354AB2FF8C}"="Ask Copilot"
Save the file somewhere on your computer.Region Extension, giving it a name Disable-Copilot-Custax-Mainu.,
Later, double-click the file and click Yes To confirm that you want to change the registry. Later, restart your computer and verify that Ask Copilot The option has gone from the reference menu.
If you ever want to return Ask Copilot Open and navigate options for future reference menu HKEY_CURRENT_USERdelete {CB3B0003-8088-4EDE-8769-8B354AB2FFF8C}Restart your computer, and Ask Copilot The option should be visible again.
Should you disable “Copilot”?
There are many reasons why I see the Copilot option as useless; The biggest is that it does not give any clear advantage to my productivity. For example, if I want a file summary, I am more comfortable using Chatgpt, as it has more features than Copilot.
This is complicated by the fact that my workflow is mostly browser-based, which means that I need very little of the Copilot Desktop app. Ask Copilot Admission opens. In a rare example, I need a copylot to analyze a file, I can easily pull it and leave it in the web version of Copilot (the desktop app does not support this feature). But then, Chatgpt also supports this feature, and it can analyze some file types that cannot copylot. These include code files (HTML, JS, Java, and CPP), as well as audio and video files, when I need basic transcription.
In addition, Microsoft apps such as Copilot words, Excel, PowerPoint, Notepad and Photo App are well integrated in apps. This is where I find it the most useful, compared to using the desktop app Ask Copilot Option in the reference menu. Until this feature adds more functionality, it seems meaningless for now.

Why does Copilot not help you fix problems in Windows?
Microsoft is all on AI, which is leading with Copilot. However, this is not enough where it should be.
I would also recommend disabling it as it adds unnecessary dislocation to the reference menu. So many programs that you already add junk to this menu, making it difficult to click quickly the options you actually used. The last thing you want is still more unnecessary entries in the list.
Another reason is that this inclusion seems forced. It is as if Microsoft is trying hard to find ways to use Copilot on Windows – this is the latest effort to automatically pin Copilot to the taskbar and make it difficult to disable it.
Despite my dislike for this feature, I am not saying that the Ask Copilot option in the reference menu is completely useless. If you are a fan of Copilot and use the desktop app regularly, it can be worth keeping. But for me, I have no use for this.
If you are like me, it is safe and easy to disable it. To go ahead, you may also want to disable Copilot completely in Windows if you do not need it.
