Gonanas A banana is a bread mixture that is made with a better-from-content, such as oat flour instead of rich wheat flour, and it is free from top allergies. You just add bananas at home and whatever oil is in your pantry – and this is the case. It is easy and is made with better materials, but it is not sugar-free-it is the root of our product. We wanted to make something accessible to enjoy for all.
How did you start a business?
My business partner, Annie Slabotski, and I started this company in 2019 when we were in the college’s Derm at Michigan University. We wanted you to be a better ripe, because our only option for the goods ripened on the way was Starbucks pastries. And they are delicious, but they are not made up with the best materials and are not feeling their best.

I am eating banana bread, and so we used a family recipe with a healthy twist on it. Annie’s family lives at a distance of 45 minutes from the campus, so we are cooked. I completely burnt the pav bread before, but we still ate from inside and as it was, “Oh, we sell it.”
Can you talk about your early development? Was it more than a side hustle when it became clear?
After graduation, we were blowing banana bread and in 2021, we published it to launch it as a mixture of a house, and this is all what we do today. Going from a finished product with a five -day shelf life for mixing with a two -year shelf life had a huge impact on our scalability capacity. We booted our way for a million dollars – it actually started taking off. And then we entered our first national retailers in 2023. It was the Nardastrom rack, which can look very random and non-traditional. They were looking for banana bread mix during Kovid, and they found us on social media when we had a few thousand followers and a website. We went to this news to talk about it and there was a record sales day with our mix. Now we are with different tastes among 5,000 retailers across the country. We have made 50 flavors till date.

Can you share any hard-working lessons learned on this journey?
Oh God, there are many bumps in the road. I think for the first time to raise money and learn that the whole process was a challenge, but the biggest thing is learning how to hire it properly for our company and define the values โโof our company. We had to undergo a lot of testing and error, never managed people. We focused a lot of focus on the resume and match them for job details. But you learn that there is just a blip in time because we are growing and changing and therefore do roles. Now we rent for things like humility and people’s skills. We want people who are active and good with change.
What is your top advice for someone who is looking to launch your business?
Create a network. We did not know much and you can only go so far with the knowledge of your immediate team. The creation of that network of those you rely with different types of ideas and founders who have rebuilt this time and time, it is invaluable. And specific for food companies, see what is on the market. Make sure you are actually filling a white space because it is such a crowded place.
How did you come with the name?
We wanted “Go Banana”, but we could not trademark, so we had to come with a new name. We mixed them together and finished, which was almost casual. For our original branding, we paid 100 rupees to a design club on campus at the University of Michigan. We are currently listing a real agency, starting on a full rebrand. But it is always about being scary.

When did you start searching for funding and what was that process?
We emailed every person whom we knew. I think every time we have picked up, it is between 50-100 emails at bare minimum. This is actually a volume game. But I think the best part about wealth raising is our story, our pitch, ours. When we go to a room, we come with guns and come with a lot of energy.
What is your process for new product manufacturing and how many bananas do you go through a month?
I do not know how many bananas! All tests are in my kitchen, so it is like the basics when we talk about our innovation. We are just cooking at home and when we are happy with a new recipe, we pass it to our producer. Now we are interacting for potential licensing with some fun brands to create new tastes for them, so we are very excited about what those deals can bring in business.
You have got so much success, do you think you are still in startup mode?
I always feel that we are growing, but just starting at the same time. In terms of our long -term vision, we want to see Gonanas to become a domestic brand. We want to be the number one baking brand, modern-day Betty Croker, the way people bake people.
