Tips to save yourself
Although companies like Google can take necessary steps to protect us from scams and other threats, we should take responsibility ourselves. On that end, the company makes some suggestions to keep in mind.
- Check for Luklaic DomainScammers will often use similar domain names to cheat people to follow a malicious link. For example, instead of a valid domain like “thisisgoodlink.com”, cyber criminals can bend it in links like “thisisagoodlink.support”.
- Check the web pageBefore you connect with an unknown website that turns into Google search results, get more information about it. One way to do this is to click on the link “about this result”. Then you can learn more about the site to decide if you want to find it.
- See for official informationThe search results of Google try to give reliable information. But malicious links can harvest. If you are looking at something like a customer service number, do not necessarily rely on the search results or different pages for that information. Instead, try to visit the company’s official website directly, where it should provide the right phone number.
- See out for strange formatting on a siteFinally, scammers are not always able to create a fraud website that looks like a real thing. Stay on the search for strange formatting, unusual fonts, or unexpected symbols or emojis. They can all be signs of a spoof site.
