Stir can be a major headache. Throw into a group of connected gadgets, which you need to reset the factory reset or uninstall, and things become even more painful. When you move forward, what to do with your smart home, decide that already adds a whole layer of complexity to the difficult process.

Pass through your entire place and decide what to live and what to go

Do you take your smart lock or leave it? Should you uninstall your smart lighting system or leave it and provide a wide manual for your buyer? Is it better to replace the Nest Thermostat with a non-smart one or leave it and buy a new version for your new home? What about the sensor? Speakers? smoke alarm? The list continues.

You have to go through your entire place and decide what should be held while considering your new house and what to go, what should all go: where your old gadgets will fit and you want to buy new people.

In this guide, we will see which equipment is understood to take with you and is it probably easy to leave behind. I will also discuss what to do with each gadget: How to decomp it to your old place and recommend it to your new house – or if you plan to leave it behind, how to reset it.

    Take a smart home inventory

Homepass is an iOS / Mac app that can track all your smart home gadgets and also store details such as the setup code and serial number.

The first step is to find out what you have so that you can ensure that you accidentally do not leave that expensive smoke alarm behind and when it comes to re -installing the equipment in your new home, get ready. Open the main app (or apps) used to control your gadget, and from there, make a list of everything installed in your house.

You can use a home inventory app or just a good old -fashioned spreadsheet. I recommend using a smart home backup app like Homepass for Homekit & Matter (iOS and Mac). This will list all your gadgets from the room and store their homcomit, matter and any other relevant code that you may need to re -set in your new home. You can also attach links to goods, files and accessories including manuals, which are useful to set the goods. I have not received an Android option, but a password manager like 1password This way can work.

If you are taking a smart device like the thermostat or locking it with you, swap it for a non-smart version First You show your home.

It is also a good time to collect the password and user name for any app used for any app, as well as collect the instruction manual, whether it is physical or downloaded as PDF. Once you have a complete list, review it and decide what you plan to leave behind, what will come with you, and in the end, the funny bit – what you have to buy for your new home.

Should it live or should it go?

You have to decide if you want to take devices like smart lock and video doorbell with you. If you take them, you will need to quit a task replacement.

Most likely, new owners do not want your old smart home gear. They may not believe that you have completely reset the smart lock or still do not have access to that video doorbell. But with the right steps, it is possible to sell your home with your smart gear. In some cases – especially smart lighting and smart thermostats – you can find that your gadgets can increase your home value or be used in talks.

In broad words, it is expected that the fixtures of the house should be wired or spoiled, and anything or anything that is in battering should go with you or if you don’t want it, it should be sold, donated or recycled. If you choose to take something with you that is technically a stability, such as listed below, either keep it inside Inclusion / exclusion Your listing section is then known to potential buyers or swaps it for a non-smart version First You show your home.

To smart gear Holiday When you sell your house

A general rule of the thumb is that if something is installed in the walls or roof, it should remain. However, if you love your thermostat or there is a suit of safety cameras, which you plan to use in your new home, then the causative and cost will need to be removed in time and – in the case of essential equipment such as thermostats and light switches – replace them. You should do this before showing your home.

    Perhaps what should be here:

    • Smart Switch like Lutron Casta, Levon and TP-Link
    • Wired Smart Light Fixty (including outdoor lighting) such as Nanolef, Ara Ceiling Lights, and Philips Hue Outdoor Lighting
    • Wired smart outlets such as Eve, Levon and TP-Link
    • Smart Thermostats like Nest, Ekobi and Honeywell Home
    • Blinds / Window Treatment (Smart or not, they usually live when you sell your house and cannot fit in your new house)
    • Smart locks that are complete replacement deadbolts, such as Yale Asters, Schlease Encod and Level Lock. Many of these can be rebuilt like traditional locks.
    • Wired Video Dorbel -like Ring Pro and Nest Wired
    • Smart sprinkler controller such as Rachio, Moen, or Orbit B-Hive
    • Smart security systems such as ring, simplicafe, and absode, especially if you have a lot of sensors and devices that spoil in walls, windows and dorframes
    • Security cameras fixed for home, such as wired floodlight camera
    • Smart smoke alarm, especially wired
    • Smart garage door controller
    • Smart plumbing, such as Moen kitchen tap, A Kohaler Smart Shower ValveOr one Phyn smart water shut-off valve
    • Smart tools including refrigerator, oven, dishwasher and microwave (if it is inherent)

To smart gear Take When you sell your house

Whatever plug in and / or permanent attachment, should leave home with you.

    • Smart speakers of Sonos, Amazon, Nest, Apple and others
    • Your Wi-Fi router and modem (who was rented, you may need to be returned to your ISP)
    • Smart Hub – As long as it is not integral to leave you, such as Casta Smart Switch Lutron Hub
    • Smart Bulb – Take them with you until you have a full integrated setup with bulbs in the roof, light strips fixed on the walls, and embedded motion sensor, which you want to leave
    • Smart plug
    • Smart sensors such as motion, leaks, and contact sensors that are not connected to the security system of a home
    • Smart TV and / or streaming boxes like Apple TV, Amazon Fire Stick, or Google Chromecast
    • Retrofit smart door locks that do not replace the entire deadbolt, such as August Smart Lock
    • Robot vacuum and mops
    • Smart washer and dryer – unlike kitchen equipment, they usually do not live with the house

How to transfer ownership of your smart home gadgets

If you have interacted to leave any of your smart devices behind, make it clear in your sales that you are leaving them “like”. You do not want to stay on the hook as a sysadmin for new residents.

However, as a courtesy and to reduce the potential fear of a buyer, I recommend installing a dedicated email address to your home and transferring those devices to that email address. (This would mean that the factory is resetting them or transferring or sharing ownership in email.)

When the sale stops, hand over the email address and password to the new owner. Then, go in and remove yourself from any device and remove them from your app (or remove the app if you do not have any other device from that company). Do this before leaving, because some devices will not allow you to reset a factory unless you are on the same network.

Before reseting or transferring a device, remove any smart home integration, such as Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, or iftt.

The new owner can use an email address to move the device ownership for himself and set new accounts and passwords, all without disturbing you.

By using Gmail -like service, you can also create a Google Drive Folder with all manual PDFs and a Google doctor who lists devices, their brands, model names and any other relevant details, the new owner may need.

As mentioned, you must either reset the factory or transfer each tool that leaves the house. However, consider how you carefully treat each device so that you can ensure that you do not “break” the house. If you reset the factory a thermostat, it can no longer work properly, causing excessive temperature to damage the house. The same goes to a smart sprinkler system – you don’t want to stay on the hook for a new lawn.

The fourth-Je Google Nest Learning Thermostat was hanging on a wall near a ladder.

If you plan to move your smart thermostat with you, install a replacement and ensure that the HVAC system is working correctly to prevent any loss to the system.

Important systems for the new owner should be functional, to ensure that the factory reset and / or ownership check with the device manufacturer for steps to move. Additionally, safety devices such as cameras, security systems and smart locks often require Special phaseWhich are designed to ensure that no one can handle your account without your permission. If you reset them without following those steps, you can leave the new owner with a dead gadget.

If you are overtaking the safety cameras, remember to remove or wipe any storage system, such as microSD card or cloud backup, and cancel any membership.

This is why the email address of the house matters a lot. The new owner can still control and use the equipment when it is organized, and then they can easily reset the factory themselves and transfer permissions in their own emails, leading to more confidence that they have completely disappeared.

How to reset Factory Reset Smart Home Gear

Some devices have special transfer and / or factory reset tips, which are important to follow. Here are links to some more popular equipment:

How to pack your smart home gear

For the devices you are taking with you, be as systematic as possible about packing them. As you uninstall the devices, place them in your original packaging or containers, such as the ziplock bag, to keep all the components together, including screws, stands, remotes and other items. Label the contents of the bag with the name, room and location of the device. This will make it very easy to set everything back in your new house.

Do not reset the factory these devices. Just unplug them and pack them; Remove any battery if you still have some time ago. Then, when you go to your new house, set your Wi-Fi with the same SSID and password, which you used earlier, power back, and you should look back on your device and back to your smart home app as if nothing has changed.

Of course, a step is also a great time to start your smart home from scratching. But this is a complete post!
