Now that pocket is closing, what are among us who rely on article collection? You can try to switch to another cloud archiveing service Raindrop.ioBut as it is a service, it is run by only a friend in Kazakhstan.
If one Arab dollar company For example, Mozilla cannot be disturbed to keep its pocket archiveing service running, it is a risk to rely on a lone developer, no matter how talented or well in mind.
Instead, how about self-hosting your own article collection service on your own computer gear? In this way, you are all the owners and no one can close it.
Also: Pocket is shutting down – here is mentioned what small data you can still get.
As it turns out, there is an open-source project (of course there!) Archival This is what he does. In this article, I will show you how to set it. In a later article, I will show you that whatever data you receive, managed to recover from pockets in the archivebox.
Where you can run archivebox
Archivebox has indigenous distribution for both Linux and MacoS. You can also run it as one Post -working laborer Container on any device including Windows. Since I have an old Mac mini that has converted into a Linux-based homelab Dokar server, this is where I have set my set.
If you are not familiar with Docker and how to install it, or how to install Linux, or how to convert an old Mac into Linux, ZDNET’s jack walons have covered you. Click on the link in the previous sentence to come for speed.
Dokar is a container service. Originally, it is like a virtual machine (VM), but without a machine. When you set a VM, you are configuring an entire computer emulator and an entire operating system. So if you are running a bunch of VM, you have too much overhead (and potentially OS license) to deal with.
A container service like Dokar connects the app-specific layer at the top of any other operating system. You can run the same doctor container on the Linux box, a Mac box or a Windows PC, and it will usually be happy.
As much as I use VM for certain types of projects, is the right environment for something like Docker Archivebox.
Establish archives
The first thing I did was associated with my homelab server, and archivebox made a directory for data. I want the data that the docker stays outside the container, so it can be given properly backup as part of the machine’s file system.
Mkdir -P/Opt/Archivebox/Data
This command makes a folder called archivebox in the directory, called /opt, and then forms a data folder inside it.
Next, this is the time to set the archivebox container. I manage the doctor by command line and using a container management tool PortThe chat with me instructed me to install the archivebox container.
Also: How to install Ubuntu Linux (it’s easy!)
Here I asked chat:
“I want to install an archivebox on my dock system in Portenner. How can I set it so that the archive data is accessible outside the container, but also for the archivebox app?”
This gave me guidelines.
I am associated with my Portainer example and was pasted in lines provided by Chatgpt. A few minutes later, I had a working archivex installed.
I went into some snag. What I did, chat told that “the archivebox is not working,” and it inspired me through a series of many steps to fix the problem. About 10 minutes later, I was able to enter the archivebox through the web interface.
Suparuser
I tried to save a web page, but was motivated to login.
Since I had not set a login earlier and did not even set a user to be an administrator, I said for the right command line chat and pasted it into a terminal window on the server.
And then, I was inside. This was the time to add its first URL.

Storing pages through web interfaces
It is not ideal to store the URL through the web interface, but it is a good place to start. Later, I will show you how to add chrome extension to do it more systematically. To add the URL, click on the Add button. You will see this form.
It is the top part of the form. You can add one or a bunch of the URL. I started with one of my recent articles, to see how it works. Once you paste in the URL, scroll down.
Here, you will see different forms that can save your content. Since I am not yet sure what I like, I have left them all. When no format is chosen, the archivebox saves them all.
Initially, you will see the indicator shown below. The archivebox lists an item as pending if it is still snatching data for local storage. I found that if you wait a few minutes, the pending goes and the complete list is available.
Storing the page through chrome extension
Did the pocket the ability to tap a button and store a page for a pocket database. Fortunately, most of that capacity is also available for archivebox. The archivebox will let you tap on a button in the extension bar to save the page. You can also add tags.
Unfortunately, the archivebox does not allow you to choose a link, right-click and save it. I loved that feature to store a batch of pages at a time. Nevertheless, for a quick alternative solution, the archivebox must prove to be eligible.
To establish the extension, go to the Chrome web store and search for the archivebox.
Proceed and install it. You will see a new icon that looks like the archivebox logo.
Next, right-click on the button and choose the option. You will get this setup form.
Insert URL for your example of archivebox in the field marked with arrows. Note, your URL probably ends with Port 8000: 8000 -. Do not fill in API key. Archivebox no longer needs it. This trapped me for a while, but when I finally emptied the ground, it did all this work.

You can also set some automatic capture magic. If you scroll down on the configuration form, you will see this wizard.
This will allow you to set the chrome extension for automatically stored pages, if your URL matches a special regular manifestation (a formula that describes the string pattern).
Save pages
Once you save some pages, your main collection interface will look something like this.
Here, I have saved my recent three articles in all the formats that allow collection. You can search for articles, tag them, and filter by a wide range of characteristics. Unfortunately, a native archivebox reading app for iOS or Android does not appear.
If you click on any page, you will see a bunch of viewing options.
You can click on whichever person you like and can read the article. I clicked on Chrome> Single File Options and was easily able to read my article, which is originally very formatted as ZDNET. I would probably compromise on that format as my main format, because I do not want to use all my server location on many copies of thousands of articles.
You may want to select the formats you want to save to reduce storage use, but for now, it is good to have an option.
Where your data lives
The major advantage of running archivebox is that your data is under your control. Because we set the archives to be out of the archivebox container, all data are stored in the file system.
In the screenshot above, I just clicked in the archive data directory and dug it until I found one of the article folders. All your data lives here.

You can return it, make additional copies of it, and as long as you want, you can make it the owner of yourself. No billion-dollar company is deciding that you cannot have anymore. This is yours
You do not even need archivebox to see your archives. I just dug into my folder structure and double-clicked the HTML file. The entire article was.
Finding the right file may be a little pain, but it is all there. And yes, I know that I am running a firefox on the homelab machine. As soon as I get some empty minutes, I will turn into chrome.
Stay I am trying to import all 24,480 articles from the pathetic URL listing of the pocket. Once I work it, I will report back and share a step-by-step process that you can use with your archivebox installation.
