Google does not do everything or touches that turns into gold.
Case in point: New Gemini AI is not additional for Gmail, it is all broken. While it works surprisingly well when it comes to composing emails and summarizing a thread, the great irony is that most search-related signs are not even helpful from far.
(Note: I asked Google Representative about the results of my test and he did not reply.)
I focused on the Gemini icon for the first time about a week ago and immediately started diving. The AI Bot is starting rolling out for many users with an update that includes new search functions, enhanced smart answers and some inbox clean up prompts.
Smart Answer and Summary
Before I cover what doesn’t work for me, just let me say: I can see where all this is and I am mostly pleased with the basic functions, such as smart answers and summary.
I am using AI to provide some basic help with my email answers, as I have used several chats to help create and modify the email. Gemini performs an exemplary work. When you want help, you can open a sidebar and enter the signal. In my phone or in browser, I could also ask Gemini to “polish” my own email, adding more details and references in seconds.
I also really liked the summary. At the top of the screen, there is a button called “Summer this email” and Little Star Icon for Gemini. You will see a summary with action stages, and in all my tests, Gemini was accurate and helpful. I found that I did not need to read back on a thread and used Mithun to catch me in conversation.
Where things got angry
I was not here for smart answers and summary, though. I have been able to do this with other AI bots for the last three years.
I want an AI that goes far ahead with my email, such as the equipment to help me not understand only an email thread. I have about 650,000 emails in my Gmail and it is a treasure that Gemini can easily detect.
I wanted to be able to find out in which subjects I was most emailed this year on most times discussions, and to create a collective email with those who I know the most that I would be out for a few days in June.
Unfortunately, Gemini looks insufficient from decency and gives wrong results. When I asked Bot that I have the most email this year and in May, the results were not correct.
Mithun listed only two people and I barely interacted with them. It is possible that Mithun has just found a recent conversation, but I had sought all the results of 2025 and May.
When I asked Mithun about the topics I had discussed the most often, AI was unaware of Anand which emails were sent to me. My signal “on 2025 the most discussed and what was to answer” and Mithun listed a group of email newsletters.
This was an error, because Gemini was only looking at the emails sent to me, not those where I interacted.
I also told Mithun that I should write an email for those with whom I interact the most, stating that I will stay out on 5-6 June. Once again, Mithun found only those who used to email me the most.
While the email made by the bot was the assistant, which I wanted to have a bot to lift – compose an email with each person in a blind copy. I just wanted to send.
And what is broken
Mithun is also going to help with inbox cleanup duty, but it was mostly missed. I asked Mithun for Gmail on my iPhone to look for old emails with big attachments and Bot showed me every email with an attachment, not the biggest attachment. And, they were not old emails – they were all from the present month.
I also asked Gemini to show me email with the biggest attachments. For some reason, this sign did not work. “I could not help with it” response.
This hint worked, though: “Show me all emails with an attachment from May 2024.” I was then able to quickly remove all the messages that were helpful. The problem is that Mithun used to work 25% about the time when I was trying to clean my inbox. It is a hit or miss.
I really wanted a bot to understand my goals. Inbox clean up is fine, although whoever has used Gmail for some time knows that we are able to control our inboxes using discoveries for many years.
For example, I can type “big: 5m: 2024/05/24: 2024/05/24: 2025/05/25” to find files with more than 5MB enclosure this year. There is also a filter to help you guide you through that process.
Instead, I wanted Gemini to be more like a smart assistant. More than anything, Gemini seemed only to find recent emails. In a query, I asked which emails seem necessary, and the bot has mentioned only two since last week.
I asked in which email a shipping label was attached and the bot was found only four, even though there are several dozen for the last two months.
What does it all mean
Gemini in Gmail is higher in a test phase. Google is adding new features and extending AI as time progresses, possibly depending on the response or date collected by them. For now, AI is not really worth it for me, because the results are very unexpected or lump sum.
I hope the technology will improve, but I will probably take it to dive again until it becomes clear that Gemini will work expected. I want the bot to make me more productive and every time I type in a prompt, I work firmly. We are not clearly not yet.
