There are many ways to pay someone using your smartphone, but tap-to-feet solutions remain unmatched. Samsung has taken a unique job in general tap-to-pe-pay implementation, and I am not convinced that other phones are not yet.
Samsung’s unique tap transfer feature
Samsung is adding a new “tap to transfer” feature to the Samsung wallet, which lets you send money to your friends through your mobile wallet without any account. This means that you can use your debit card to send money to friends or family without the need to download an additional app. Samsung has participated with visas and master cards to bring this functionality.
The facility uses NFC (near-area communication) to connect with debit cards in the recipient’s wallet app. Since it is directly connected to the debit card, it works with any digital wallet app beyond Samsung Wallet. It can also transfer the fund directly to the physical debit card, as long as the card has tap-to-pea capabilities.
So it does not matter whether your friends are using Venmo, Cash App or Google Pay. As long as they are registered in their wallet app, the fund can be transferred by tapping your phone together.
In cases where physical proximity is not possible, Samsung’s wallet app will also regularly provide colleague payments to colleague. This lets you send money using only a phone number, but it only works with other Samsung wallet users.
This feature removes the problem of being on the same wallet app as everyone on the same wallet app, which is often cumbersome and slow, while removing the need to transfer traditional banks. Since the feature works using NFC, you also save time in installing new recipients.
Hold your wallet app for a while
This is the best tap-to-pay implementation that I have seen for years, especially how easy it is to install and use Samsung wallet. However, I will not recommend to get rid of your wallet app yet.
In principle, the convenience should work with any contactless visa or master card debit card when it is launched later in May 2025. However, in a footnote Samsung announcement It is said that this “requires a contactless and payment transaction-capable visa or a mastercard debit card from a run-in American bank.”
There is no word to participate in banks, so you cannot use that feature when it rolls out for the first time, despite having a tap-to-pe-able card and Samsung phone.
There are also many security issues that I can see with the feature. Digital wallets are safe to use, but they are not airtight, especially when contactless or use NFC payment methods. Some safety issues plaguing contact-free payment systems almost a decade ago, such as evsdroping and man-in-a-media attacks, still apply. I am sure Samsung has done its homework in this context, but only time will tell how good it is.
