I swap my favorite Linux Desktop for Cosmic Alpha of System76 – and I regret zero

    Key takeaways of zdnet

    • Cosmic desktop of System76 will soon be in beta.
    • Even as an alpha release, cosmic is impressive.
    • Cosmic is faster as any Linux desktop I have experienced.

Alpha release cannot be used for any reason other than testing. Correct?

This is a common opinion, and yet I am here, working on the Cosmic Desktop of System76 as it is in a stable position.

This is not … and shows it.

Yes, I have experienced problems. For example, the cosmic opera does not like the browser at all. In fact, when I first started writing this, I was using opera, and it was suffering from a memory leak, causing me a hard reboot. As soon as I logged in, I opened the Zen browser, and things are much better.

Too: This Linux Distro makes one click to more than 20 desktops

But why did I take this most uncertain path? It begins with a soul.

    Pop! _OS Default Desktop

Because System76 is hard to work on cosmic, Pop Default! _OS desktop environment is not getting updates, and recently it is worth noting. For example, when I lock the screen, it will be locked, but will switch back and forth between a black screen and greetings. All this is fine and good, except that when you are trying to sleep and light from your office keeps you awake.

There were also random accidents, which were not very terrible to take care, but I got tired of SSH from another machine in my desktop and tired of running a revival_bonom script written by me.

Too: 4 methods are better than the latest KDE plasma release than before – and how to try it yourself

Even when I would run an update, I was starting receiving notices of the posting software on the ganom side of things. I believe pop! _OS is still using GNome 42, and given that GNOME is currently at number 49, it is far behind. I am not slamming System76 for this because I know how hard they are working on cosmic, and the end results are going to be fantastic.

If only I can wait for the “end result” release. But no, I had to jump the ship now.

    My experience with cosmic

First of all, out of aging suggestion, cosmic light-year that is ahead of pop! It was _OS and is currently. Cosmic is highly configured, electricity is sharp and beautiful. They are the three combinations that I can take back.

And cosmic is beautiful. Thanks to various configuration options, you can see this desktop environment, although you want. I understand that aesthetics for most users do not top in the food chain, but cosmic enjoys something that enjoys the speed: speed.

I am addicted to the pop! The new cosmic shop is polar unlike that. It is incredibly sharp, and I have not yet experience it crashing it. And when I say “fast,” I mean that the eyelids do not blink or you will miss opening it fast. I am not doing exaggeration.

Too: Want to learn Linux? These 5 games make it fun – and they are free

It is perfectly worth dealing with random alpha-relief issues when you get a desktop environment that it happens rapidly. Cosmic feels that it is “larger” as KDE plasma and rapidly as XFCE. I can only imagine how fast it will be after reaching a stable position.

As I mentioned earlier, opera and cosmic do not play well together, and I am 100% fine, until they can meet together, I am adopting Zen as my browser. Till then, I may have made a permanent switch from opera to Zen (at least until something changes my brain).

The good news is that since I dropped Opera as my default Linux browser, cosmic has less problems. I no longer listen to the fan of my theLio system with opera demands (which is likely to be a memory leak), and my cursor is no longer stuttering because I move it around the desktop.

Also: My 10 favorite Linux distribution, rank of all time

The collection of cosmic apps (shop, text editor, music player, files, settings, terminals, etc.) all perform great work and (as everything else is the rest) incredibly rapidly. Of course, the speed of cosmic can be known with the rust for System 76, which is going to the desktop environment as its own programming language. The war is sharp. Does the war do so fast? The rust is very good for freeing memory during compilation, which eliminates expensive runtime checks associated with garbage collection and/or dynamic memory management. The rust also prevents the data race and thanks for the safe parallel execution for ownership and borrowing mechanisms.

In other words, the rust is sharp, and the cosmic advantage at that speed. I have never experienced a fully developed desktop environment to run it quickly.

    When is a stable release?

So far, there is no timeline for stable release; However, System76 announced that the first beta would come in the next few weeks. This is very good news, because beta is much better than alpha.

One thing I do not know is whether System76 will make a full upgrade possible. Pop! _OS is currently based on Ubuntu 22.04, and pop! This means that a new kernel and all other gifts that recently come up with Ubuntu release.

I know that it is crazy to use Alpha release software (especially a desktop environment) for daily tasks, but I just couldn’t help it. I have been eagerly waiting for cosmic for months and decided that I could not wait anymore. was it worth it? Absolutely. I am enjoying more cosmic than enjoying Linux Desktop in a very long time.

Too: 5 Reasons today to switch to an irreversible Linux distro -and to try first

However, I would not recommend anyone to use cosmic until you are not familiar with Linux to use the terminal and read log files (for troubleshooting). When the beta version is released, this is another story. I have used beta software for many things and usually find it very stable. Given how stable the current alpha release of cosmic is, I can only imagine that beta release will be even better.

To create Kudos to System76, I think there will be the best Linux desktop environment on the market.
