I tested a $ 400 Android phone with an e -ink like a display, and it was boring

    Key takeaways of zdnet

    • TCL NXTPAER 60 Ultra is currently available in Europe for € 449 for 256GB version or is € 499 for 512GB.
    • It has a large, 7.2-inch screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate that mimics a pleasant writing experience with e-Ek display and stylus.
    • It is not yet available in America.

TCL’s NXTPaper technique is really unique, but after reviewing TCL 60 XE NXTPAER 5G, I realized that its capacity is limited to low-end smartphones.

TCL NXTPAER 60 ultra changes, which integrates the latest version of NXTPaper 4.0 technology into a large-form mid-range device. It is not a specin-chasing flagship like the Galaxy S25 Ultra or Pixel 10 Pro, instead has been deployed as “ultra” in terms of comfort and size rather than sheer performance.

A screen manufactured for eye comfort

When I unboxed NXTPAER 60 Ultra, I saw the first thing, it was a 7.2-inch big panel, which dwarfs the Galaxy S25 Ultra I Carry. The use of one-hand is almost impossible, and I had to ensure that my pocket could handle the footprint of the device, especially when equipped with the case that stylus also stores.

Too: This $ 200 Android phone makes my pixel look overbiring with a paper-like display

The LCD panel has 120 Hz refresh for smooth navigation, and Black Level impressed me more than expected from LCD. In fact, most color science was similar to an OLED performance. The technique running a soothing performance of the eyes of NXTPaper adds extra layers at the top, which can give the material a subtle fog. Matt Finnish kills any reflection and most of the fingerprints, but also makes it difficult to look directly in sunlight.

For the comfort of the eyes, two things are standing out. First of all, about 3.4% battery is effective for life according to the NXTPAER technology TCL, a feature that does not require color tinning or software settings.

Another important note is the total lack of pulse-width modulation to achieve its low glowing potential. It is very good for those who are suffering from headache or stressed from the display with twinkling. The panel can be slow in all ways for two knots, which meant that scrolling lights also remained peaceful at bedtime.

Change mode on a switch flicks

TCL NXTPAPER 60 Ultra Display Mode

    Jason Howell/ZDNET

NXTPaper devices such as 60 Ultra include a physical switch on the side to unlock different display mode with variable color characteristics, as well as deep system adjustment means to enhance the performance of the battery and limit the distraction.

Max ink mode is the most rigorous change, in which everything turns black and white while the system decreases in some major apps. This mode was the perfect choice for no-dystraction reading. It is not e -ink technique, but it definitely looks like it, and it increases battery life by hundreds of hours on a full charge. While I did not overcome it, I planned to read and plan a few hours to take it on my upcoming visit to Ireland for this purpose.

Too: The tablet that has successfully replaced my kindle and iPad is now a qualified follower

Ink paper mode also goes to Grassscale, but retains the full Android operating system. I found it ideal for this news and accidental browsing. Switching on the Google Photo or camera app temporarily returns the device to full color, and that a sudden burst from black and white in color helped me really help to appreciate this panel how vibrant this panel could be.

Color paper mode mutires saturation without eliminating it. This is probably my favorite mode because it keeps everything easy on the eyes, while still lets me watch videos or browsing Instagram, as if I am using a monochromatic e-ink device.

    Writing looks great

TCL NXTPAER 60 Ultra T Pain

    Jason Howell/ZDNET

Using a stylus on a smartphone is not necessary in my experience, but I appreciate that the length of TCL has gone to integrate a competent stylus experience in 60 ultra. T-fen, sold separately, uses electro-magnetic resonance, which is the same technique behind Wakom and Samsung’s pen. There is no battery in passive stylus, although you will never know it. A small hover on the display presents a cursor, and T Pen provides 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity. I had a difficult time to find out any delay.

Also: I tried the new Meta Smart Glass of Meta in my production studio – my decision as a material manufacturer

How does T pen feel on this screen. The matte texture pen paper-like friction, and I focus on an unconscious sound, which writes to connect confusion.

My biggest frustration is that T Penn does not store in the phone itself, such as Samsung’s Galaxy S Ultra on the phone. TCL sells a heavy case with a side-mounted attachment point, but it already makes a huge smartphone that is very large in everyday use.

    AI features decrease

TCL NXTPAPER 60 Ultra AI Podcast Mode

    Jason Howell/ZDNET

NXTPAER 60 Ultra has a MediaTek Dimentation 7400 with 12 gigabytes RAM. I got this midrange chip to perform well in standard OS functions, and pubg went smoothly with no noticeable heat. The leg tries to crawl more on taking a lot of photos and maneuvers through the camera interface. It also takes longer than expected to switch NXTPAPER display mode with togle.

The battery is a healthy 5,200 mAh, which lasted for the whole day with constant use. Features like Max ink mode help to remove batteries anxiety, especially since this switch is a simple flicker. Wired charging top 33 watts, reaching 50% in 30 minutes. However, there is no wireless charging, which looks like a missed opportunity on a branded phone as “ultra”.

Too: I found a budget Android Tablet, which is eligible to replace my kindle (and the price is right)

TCL includes a handful of AI features, many of which are table steaks. Summary, transcription, magic eraser and all are all present to find circles. A unique bookshellf app appears within the Max Inc. mode that can replace any book with AI-powered text-to-speech in audiobook or two-individual podcasts. I could not hear “The Odissi” for more than a few minutes before the characteristics of the odd voice and the robot delivery.

On the plus side, software support is stronger than my expectation. TCL promises three major Android OS updates with a seven -year security patch. This is a solid update promise for such a mid-range smartphone.

A rare mid-range phone with periscope zoom

TCL NXTPAER 60 Ultra Camera Archery

    Jason Howell/ZDNET

The rear camera system features a 50-megapixel periscope lens offering 6X optical quality zoom as well as 3x optical zoom. This lens can go up to 100x in all ways, although I would not recommend using those settings. Unlike Google’s sharping on 100X photos shot with Pixel 10 Pro series, TCL processing is rigid and unusable.

Also: Want Pixel 10 Pro? I recommend buying these 5 phones instead – why is it here

He said, I am always happy to zoom an optical zoom in my toolset, and I enjoyed the use of periscope for food and flower macro photography. The primary 50MP lens can capture good results in good light, but post-processing of TCL is often washed images. The 8MP ultravide is forgetful and an easy suggested that some corners were cut off.

    ZDNET purchase advice

Nxtpaper 60 ultra With surprisingly competent stylus integration and an impressively differentiated performance, Samsung S25 performs well as a less expensive option for Ultra. The camera system is compromised, AI features promise as much as they can distribute, and larger size can be a polarization design option.

Another major negative side for American buyers is that TCL has not yet announced whether it is planning to bring the phone to the states. Currently, it can be found in Europe, Latin America and Asia-Pacific, and the price of € 449 for models with 256GB storage, or € 499 Euro for 512GB.
