Families with children generally depend on routine, but maintaining a routine with young children is one of the most difficult tasks. Be it a school event, unexpected guests, or a stomach bug or pink eye problem – something or the other always derails our daily routine. However, when you have pets that depend on you for stability you can’t afford to give up the routine.

Over time, I’ve added smart home devices like smart feeders, trackers, and pet cameras to our dog’s life. Yet the only thing I wasn’t able to automate was letting her in and out to take care of business, until I tried High Tech Pet Power Pet Roll Up Door,
Before installing this smart doggie door, I had a pet door that I purchased on Amazon and installed in one of the sliding glass doors of my sunroom. I had to keep a sliding glass door leading to the sunroom open to allow my dog access, which left us vulnerable to hot or cold temperatures as well as insects like wasps entering the house. I decided to give the high tech pet door a try, and the results have been surprising in the best way.

i installed Power Pet Roll Up Door and Glass Panel On the sliding glass door that leads to the sunrise room, so my dog can go out that door and then go out the doggie door to his designated “toilet.” His toilet is a small, fenced-in area surrounded by gravel and artificial grass, which allows me to keep his mess inside and turn it off periodically for easy cleanup.
My dog wears a collar that triggers the power pet roll up door’s sensor to open when he approaches, and then a few seconds later the door closes. The door opens immediately at the slightest resistance, so if he waits on the threshold for too long it does not cause him any discomfort, it does not harm him. While some dogs shy away from having the flap rub on their head or back, this door’s roll-up mechanism doesn’t get in their way.

Compared to the cheap doggie door I already had, the Power Pet Roll Up Door is quite a sophisticated addition to the sliding glass door. High Tech Pet offers the same doggie door in both door and wall mounting options, and each comes in three different sizes.
Even with the pet door glass panel installed, I can access the sunroom without fear of the door falling.

When I installed the pet door, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the manufacturers thought of everything. The Pet Power Pet Roll Up Door attaches to the frame of your sliding glass door with a small latch that is installed with a drill and a screwdriver. A weatherproof strip is also included for the other side where your sliding glass door closes.
You can close and lock your sliding glass door on the pet door panel so you don’t have to worry about it remaining open or unlocked. You can also open your sliding glass door and access the door as needed, even with the pet door panel installed, which is not something I can do with my other pet doors. The pet door will not wobble because it is attached to the sliding door frame during installation. I was lucky enough to have an outlet right next to the door to plug it in, as it requires constant power.

The doggie door has a set of buttons that let you open and close it, turn it on and off, and two dials to adjust its sensors. You can adjust the sensitivity of the indoor and outdoor sensors to adjust the proximity required to activate the door. You can also turn the sensor on or off to control when your dog is allowed to go out or come back.
The pet door panel locks into the sliding glass door when needed.

I’ve been using my door for over a month, and my dog became accustomed to the system in minutes, the same night I installed it — and this is not a super obedient, highly trained dog (sorry, friend). I taught him how to go in and out with some recipes, and he immediately understood the mechanism. Within a week, my family went on an overnight trip, and left the dog at home with his automatic feeder and water dispenser until we returned the next day.

The door has flaws and imperfections; The app is key. I’m sure the company plans to improve the app through updates, but the app sometimes crashes, especially when setting schedules, or sometimes I have trouble connecting to the pet door. However, most of the time, I have no problem controlling the door remotely.
ZDNET’s shopping advice
My dog is reactive and does not play well with other dogs, so being with him causes anxiety and requires medication. Because of this, he is left alone in a small confined area or crate, which we do not like because it increases his stress. When we returned from that trip, it was wonderful to be able to give him the freedom to live comfortably at home, where he loves to be most, and enjoy the confidence to go in and out as needed, even if it was just for a night.
This door has literally changed our everyday life – it has become second nature to our dog. Instead of throwing him out of the house with a treat, he walks right up to the door and is happy to go in and out because he knows he has complete control over that aspect of his life. And I like it for that.
