I wore the Ora Ring 4 Ceramic for a week, and it busted the myth of ugly fitness tech

    ZDNET Highlights

    • The Ora Ring 4 Ceramic retails for $499.
    • It has the same capabilities as the Ora Ring 4 but with a Zirconia ceramic finish and four new colors.
    • This is a stylish and whimsical addition to the Ora ring lineup.

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: most technology is ugly and not aesthetically appealing. No matter how many times a smartwatch brand touts its device as delightful or beautiful in a keynote, it will still be a bulky piece of metal with red and green glowing sensors.

He is alright. We accept the aesthetic imperfections of technology because it serves its functional purpose. I don’t need my laptop to be pretty – I need it to write this article. I don’t need my smartwatch to be as cool as a Rolex – I need it to record my workouts. But wouldn’t it be nice if the tech accessories we wear around our wrists, fingers and ears were as pretty as the jewelery we wear for a night out on the town?

Also: The Ora Ring Is Not the Defense Department’s Secret Weapon

This is the gist of Ora’s latest smart ring ora ring 4 ceramicIt ditches the harsh metallics that started with Ring 4 for a soft, airy palette of pastels and rich colors. Four $500 smart rings are part of this lineup: Petal (a pastel pink), Tide (a pastel blue), Cloud (a creamy white), and Midnight (a rich navy).

A glimpse of stylish quiet luxury wrapped in a technological health-tracking package, the Ring is $150 more than the starting price of its original Ring 4 lineup.

The lineup and its vibrant range of colors appeals more to female customers than the original Ring 4 lineup of neutral metals. More of a fashion statement than an everyday tech accessory, Oura positions the ceramic ring as a personal touch that can reflect its wearer’s style and taste, making their style, whether it’s an airy white ring or a daisy pink ring, “feel true.”

Also: Why is your Ora Ring’s battery draining quickly (and what Ora is doing about it)

With its release of the Ceramic, Aura has also launched multi-ring support in its app, so users can switch their Oura Ring 4 for their Aura Ring 4 Ceramic one night without disconnecting to connect another.

Compared to the original Ring 4, the ceramic is slightly thicker. Ora Ring 4 was already thick, and ceramic is even thicker. It’s made of Zirconia ceramic, a tough material made to withstand scratches. Ora says the material is so strong that it’s susceptible to scratches by softer metals. Ora addresses these troubles with a gifted ceramic polishing pad that also includes the purchase of a ceramic ring.

As far as software is concerned, the Ora Ring 4 and Ora Ring 4 Ceramic are identical. Apart from the different materials coating the outside (titanium with Ring 4 and Zirconia Ceramic with Ring 4), the hardware inside the Ring – the battery and sensors – is also the same. Because of this, I won’t go into detail about the smart ring’s software, which is fantastic. You can read about it in my original Ora Ring 4 review.

Of all the technology I review daily, the Aura Ring is one of the few products I wear all the time (or most of the time). Its data visualization and amount of tracked biomarkers provide the right amount of information to its health-enthusiast user base. It has advanced features for health buffs, but also enough data to satisfy keen sleep and exercise trackers.

The smart ring accurately told me when I was getting sick and helped me get back to good health. It also prioritizes security and is one of the few companies committed to protecting health data. This is a product that delivers on its promise – no small feat in the wearable health sector.

The Zirconia ceramic finish is absolutely gorgeous. Unlike the Ora Ring 4 and its titanium finish, which fades over time, the Zirconia Ceramic retains its rich color that is built into the material. It’s shiny and smooth, has a great finish to run your finger over, and it’s the only wearable item I’ve tested that doesn’t immediately look that way.

I could probably say the same about its metallic counterpart, but the Ring 4 Ceramic differs in Ora’s priority as a fashion statement first and a health tracker second. This not only expands the audience of Ora Rings but also makes health tracking normal and aesthetic.

Also: Two subscription-free smart rings have just been banned in the US — here’s what comes next

The only issue that Oura users, including me, have faced is the device’s steadily weakening battery life over time. After about a year of use, Ora Ring 4 users have reported low battery life, which is nowhere near its eight-day guarantee. Oura seems to be addressing this by offering free rings to users and starting a ring recycling program for old rings.

    ZDNET’s shopping advice

The only difference between Ora Ring 4 and ora ring 4 ceramic It’s ceramic’s playful palette of colors, materials, and its extra $150 starting price. This fashion tax makes the ceramic smart ring a fashion accessory first, a health tracker second and a status symbol third.

If you want to keep track of your health with a beautiful and capable smart ring with colors instead of a bulky smart watch or metal smart ring (and you can buy a $500 smart ring), the Ora Ring 4 Ceramic is for you.
