Router networks are important pieces of infrastructure that can last decades at a time. But if they are very old, hackers can knock.
Old routers are a threat to your network
The FBI has discovered a group of hackers who are exploiting old routers to pull the cyber attack. The agency’s announcement includes a list of 13 routers that have reached the position of the “end of life”, meaning that they no longer receive software updates to fix the known weaknesses.
The following router is being targeted:

Cisco Linksys E1500
-
Cisco Linksys E1550

All routers have a management interface that can be accessed either by connecting to Ethernet, Wi-Fi or router on the Internet. If the interface is exposed to the Internet, hackers may exploit the known vulnerability of a router to upload the malware and use the administrator.
The malware used in the attack is called Thomoon, which was previously found on the compromised router in 2014. FBI announcement Claims that password is not required to infect the router. The malware scans for open ports and sends a command to a weak script on the router. Once the command is executed, it installs a command and control (C2) server, which then reacts with further instructions.
The malware uploaded on the targeted router allows hackers to continuously reach the device, allowing them to be used as part of a large botnet. Botate is then used to launch coordinated DDOS attacks or sold as a proxy service that hackers use their IP addresses and identity.
The agency also confiscated two websites – Anniproxy and 5 SOCS – which used hacked routers to offer proxy services “were” to help cyber criminals hide their activities. ” The sites have been updated to show the seizure notice of a justice department.
How can you protect yourself?
If you use one of the routers described above, the best course of action is to upgrade your router to a new model. In addition to better security, you will enjoy rapid internet speed and more stable Wi-Fi connections. Even if your router is not in the list above, but has reached the situation of life, then a replacement is the way to go.

Here is told how I compare Wi-Fi router and decide which one to buy
Check these glasses while shopping for your next wireless router.
If you cannot change your router immediately, disable any distance management or administration facilities in the router’s control room. Specific instructions to do this will vary from router to router, so I recommend looking at your router model number for more information. Your router is one of the weakest equipment in your home, and should be properly secured.
For those of you who do new routers, check the new updates to ensure that your router is preserved against any weaknesses that can exploit hackers. As long as you clearly require distance management capabilities of your router, I would recommend closing the convenience for better security.
