In the world of science, C prefixes are sacred. Well, as long as you are a computing scientist, in which the option of prefix- Mega vs. Mega- may be a little controversial. It turns out that a programmer steam performance in the valve fell on the wrong side of the prefix war when showing its CPU watches in overlay, but at least it has all been fixed with a small patch.
Last week, the valve added a demonstration over the current steam beta, and I say it is quite Nifty. You get frame rate, clock speed, processor use, and memory consumption (RAM and VRAM), which you place around your screen.
However, in some Patch notes for beta steam clientValve “Fixed (D) MHz/GHz for the CPU speed values for conversion is not 2.4% less than expectation in the performance monitor.” 2.4% of CPU’s clock speed is missing? The answer lies in prefixes.
Suppose your processor is running at 3,500 MHz, but you want to show it in GHz. Since HZ is a SI unit, no SI uses prefix system where G stands for Giga and many of the 1,000. In other words, the speed of the clock is 3.5 GHz. What the valve did, which was used by GIBI’s computer science prefix, which are several of 1,024.
Divide 1,000 by 1,024 and then reduce 1; Multiply by 100, and you get a percentage difference of 2.34%! Okay, so it is not 2.4% at all, but it is clear that the valve created a boo-bo. I know that this is a very small thing, and kudos for the programmer to fix it so quickly, but it is a bit fun that the valve made such a foolish error.
Keep in mind, I want other companies to fix their overlay or performance monitor quickly. Without the desire of sound like a groaning mini, NVIDIA frameview still emphasizes forgetting major binding or folder selection. Yes, there is a team behind it Very Small (ie one or two people) and it is hardly a high priority for those things that need to be cured, but if the valve can do so, other people can.
I still like MSI Afterburner and Rivatuner statistics server For anything when it comes to choosing an adaptable performance overlay easily, but it is good to have an option. It will be interesting to see what the valve does with its small bar.
