Over the years, Meta -owned apps have faced their proper part on concerns about their shady privacy practices. Instagram is certainly not exempted from it. Now, the company is working on making your Instagram direct message more secure, but it comes at a cost.
Increased security of Instagram comes to a cost
A few hours ago, I noticed that a banner appeared in the direct message section of Instagram. As shown in the image below, it mentions that “some messages may be unavailable after June 23, 2025.”
If you are anything like me and there are memories related to everything including your messages, then this notification can take you out. Luckily, there is not much to worry. Click on learn more Button, you will be a redirect Instagram Support PageWhere it mentions the following:
Instagram is upgrading security and some old end-to-end encrypted chats may be unavailable after 23 June 2025.
End-to-end encryption is a safety facility that protects your data by ensuring that only you and sectors can read your messages. Ultimately, this means that Meta also cannot read your messages.
End-to-end encryption in Instagram DMS, however is not capable by default. On iOS and Android devices, you can start the end-to-end encrypted chat by going to your direct messages, opening a new or existing conversation thread, and then tapping the name of the recipient on top of the message. Finally, select Privacy and security Tap more Use end-to-end encryption,
Personally, I feel the fact that Instagram is strange to some old end-to-end encrypted chat, especially since the meta support article is so unclear about its argument in the article.
Although the security company is definitely a step in the right direction, I would not have expected them to wipe some chats, no matter how old they are.
Save your affected Instagram chat before too late
The good news is that if you have a conversation affected by this change, Instagram states that you can save any media or message from them that you want to keep till the date of the cutoff.
If you are on the old version of the Instagram, you may need to update the first app.
You will notice See chat The button in the banner informs you about the change, and tapping it will be taken to a page showing you all your end-to-end encrypted chat, which will be unavailable after June 23, 2025. None of mine chat is affected by this change, which means that no chat appeared on this page for me.

When I initially saw this notification, I felt that it was similar to the Instagram Technical Bug that impressed some images and videos saved in the collection section of stories, which were permanently removed. Although Instagram finished while addressing the bug, lost stories could never be restored. It was a very big boomer for me, as I used Instagram archives as a way to preserve my memories.
Regardless, at least Instagram is giving you a head-up this time and giving a chance to save your memories.
