The popular integrated development environment for Java and Kotlin is combining Jetbrains Inteltij, eventually combining its separate community version and final version. The free version is also getting new features, and will be fully open-sourced IDE in the future.
Intelligence idea Currently available in two versions: a community version which is independent and Mostly Open-source software, and final version that is paid or available to students and classes. This is not a great experience, and Jetbrences admitted in a blog post that it is “always clear which version to install or what to do when the trial time is over,” and complex distribution for the customers of education “makes friction in the classroom.”
Moving forward, Intelllij will be available as a download, simply called Intelllij Idea. If you already have the final version, nothing is changing for you other than the name. However, an finished license in the final version will no longer make you completely out of the IDE – you will simply be downgraded back to free features. If you are using the community version, you will get an update of the merged version when you are available in Intelligence Idea 2025.3.
Even though the base code for Intelllij is open-source software, and serves as a foundation Android StudioBoth communities and final versions are ownership components. The merged IDE will still have the proprietary components, but Jetbrances will offer a separate open source edition, which will start from the Intelligence Idea 2025.2.
This is the same condition as chromium with Google Chrome: the open-source version will have perfectly reproductive buildings, which are completed with github actions for continuous integration (CI) and continuous deployment (CD). Facilities required for owned components are missing, including backup and sink, package checker, AI functionality, localization plugins and WSL integration. Some of that functionality can be paired with free plugins on the jetbrance marketplace in the open source version, but not all of them.
As part of this infection, more features are coming to free users. Syntax highlighting spring, Jakarta EE, Quarks, Micronaut, JPA (JPQL/AQL), Thayma, Thymel, Velocity, Framarkar, JSP, Kuberanets Manifest and Helem will be available for charts. It will also work for non-JVM languages-which will get more information about a direct contestant for the visual studio code, with a broader syntax for many languages. Free users will also get wizard setup support for spring, Jakarta EE, Quarks, Micronaut and KTOR. Finally, free users will see the skima for databases (tables, columns, index, etc.), but data access and SQL execution will still require a version paid.

The upcoming Inteltij Idea 2025.2 release will be the first with an open source version, and the following 2025.3 will merge the final and community version versions. There is no specific release date for those versions yet.
