    ZDNET Highlights

    • Starlink hardware that has not been used since early 2024 needs to be updated.
    • This hardware will be discontinued if it is not updated by November 17th.

    Because you have until November 17th to update it, otherwise it will be the end of the line for it.

    according to a SpaceX Support DocumentsProblem affects hardware operation2024.05.0 Firmware. It must be activated and pointed toward the sky, or become “permanently deactivated” to receive the required updates by November 17, 2025.

    Customers running 2024.05.0 and 2024.12.26 firmware will also lose internet connectivity on this date if they do not update, but connectivity will be restored after the update.

    Updating is a simple three-step process:

    • Take your Starlink dish outside and turn it on.
    • Give it a clear view of the sky – Note that the dish does not need a perfectly clear view of the sky to receive updates.
    • Use the app to progress – it will take about 15 to 30 minutes to download and install.

    Note that you do not need an active subscription to download this update, and you will not be charged.

    Not sure what software your dish is running? Activate the Dish and Starlink apps, tap the Advanced button, and then you will find the software version in the Apps section.

    According to SpaceX, customers running older firmware should have been sent an email titled “Action Required: Update Software”. If you have it, don’t ignore it. If you haven’t done this, and you know you have a Starlink dish collecting dust somewhere, it might be worth activating it and checking.
