New data indicates that Meta AI’s mobile apps for iOS and Android have seen significant growth in usage. According to a new analysis from a market intelligence provider similarwebThe app’s daily active users on both platforms increased to 2.7 million as of October 17, up from about 775,000 just four weeks earlier. Additionally, Meta AI’s app installs are also on the rise, reaching 300,000 new downloads per day, compared to less than 200,000 daily downloads a few weeks ago.
For comparison, Meta AI’s app had only 4,000 daily downloads a year earlier, as of October 17, 2024.
The firm says it hasn’t seen any meaningful correlation in search or ad estimates, but notes that Meta could be driving Facebook or Instagram promotions that wouldn’t be included in its model.
However, there’s also another possible explanation for the sharp growth: the launch of Meta’s new Vibes feed in September, which introduced short-form AI-generated videos to the Meta AI mobile app.

Recently, OpenAI’s video generator Sora made headlines as its app rocketed to the top of the App Store as users rushed to try out the new technology. However, Meta AI could also benefit from this launch. While SimilarWeb says its data doesn’t prove cause and effect, it’s possible that the attention drawn to Sora prompted some people to try out Meta AI to compare the two experiences.
Another possibility is that the meta may benefit from Sora’s invite-only status. That means, those who couldn’t try the OpenAI app might have looked for an alternative to experiment with. This would also be an interesting explanation, as it suggests that OpenAI’s decision to gatekeep Sora may have directly promoted its competitors.
