The Boeing CST -100 Starlineer, a crew capsule for NASA’s commercial crew program, suffers from frequent problems. Its first crew test flight in June 2024 was reduced by technical failures, including helium pressure leaks and multiple thruster faults. NASA eventually chose Starlineer to return to Earth without its crew, placed astronauts riding at the station for protection. With those problems, NASA now says that the capsule will remain on the ground around 2026, and its next mission will be ignored.

    Technical failures and base

As NASADuring the flight test of the crew of June 2024, Starlineer faced serious propulsion issues. The pressure system of the service module detected a number of helium leaks, and five of the 28 fin-control thrusters of the capsules failed during the ISS’s approach. NASA and Boeing extended the crew’s station’s stay, while the engineers detected the problems in the thermal and seal failures.

NASA eventually decided to bring Starlineer back to Earth, concluding the test without its astronauts. Boeing and NASA have since conducted a comprehensive ground test to validate the fix: NASA’s white sands have been firing the throsters in various sequences to refine the thermal model in the facility of NASA, and Boeing has added new insulation shunt and thermal barrier to the Therster Housing to prevent overheating.

    Future of Starlineer Program

The delay of Boeing has re -shaped NASA’s commercial crew plans. NASA officials say that Starlineer can fly even without any testing before taking astronauts. Starlineer Vikas is now more billions than the budget: its original $ 4.2 billion contracts have increased by about $ 2 billion in additional costs. Meanwhile, SpaceX’s crew Dragon has blown 11 ISS crew missions and its NASA contract has moved to $ 5 billion between additional flights, while Starlineer lagged behind. NASA still sees Starlineer as a significant backup for dragon and is aimed at certifying it for crew rotation in the end of 2025 or early 2026.
