Healthcare awakes in single-use plastic. Alone in American health facilities, More than 2,800 tonnes Plastic packaging and products are thrown out every day.
Some people are more aware of this than AD U. At the beginning of the epidemic, U established a company, which created a disposable mask. One day, his niece was with him when he was recycling, and he asked him if his mask was also recycled.
“I told him that we could not recycle the mask,” he told Techcrunch. “He just interrupted me and said,” Oh, you make a lot of garbage every day. “
The words of the little girl were stuck with U, and after selling the mask company in 2021, they set to amend.
In an attempt to subdue the single use plastic problem of healthcare, U’s new company Ocosics has developed a new bio-based, biodegradable polymer. Ocosics startup is part of the battlefield, and it will be introduced in the TECRCRCH Disrupton in San Francisco later this month.
Ocosics mixes various compounds including cellulose, crustacean shells, wax and chitosan obtained from a ownership material. The result is cheaper than polyalctic acid (PLA), a widely used biodegradable plastic, with functionality, which is “similar or better than PLA,” said.
Between plastic, the term “biodegradability” is often misused, U said. Some require very specific conditions to disintegrate, while other simply separate into microscopic or nanoplastics.

“We have received international certificates to prove that the material has gone completely in six months,” U said.
Ocosix is starting with face mask, but it plans to build surgical gowns, diapers and sanitary napkins, said U said. “We want to use a safe material, non-plastic to replace fossil plastic for disposable products.”
Although the company has so far done a formal life cycle analysis, Ucosics content should have a carbon footprint that is 90% lower than polypropylene, which are widely used single-use plastic.
Ocosics sells its content to the third party, which then turns it into various products. “Currently, our business model is like the Gor-Tex,” U said. “We don’t make finished products, but we make layer, we make raw materials, and then we work with companies like 3m.” He said that branding can become an important part of a business similar to the gorge-tex.
The startup has raised $ 2.3 million, including investment from founders and other fairy investors.
Listen to more than Ocosics and dozens of other startups, already, participate in valuable workshops, and make a lasting relationship on this year’s disintegration, taking place in San Francisco from 27 October to 29 October.
