Rugged data centers promote rural internet access

Rural connectivity is still a major issue. As 2022, About 28 percent Americans living in rural areas did not have access to broadband internet, which was defined by that time 25 megabit per second for download speed, and 3 megabits per second for speed upload by Federal Communications Commission (FCC). By 2024, FCC came out with a new Benchmark With high speed requirements – increasing the number of people whose connections do not meet the definition.A potential solution to the problem is small, rugged data centers with relatively old, fruitless components, kept strategically in rural areas, such as important data can be locally stored and network providers can route through them, providing excess.

“We are not a big AI user,” CEO Dag Ricker said Duos age aiIn a dialogue Data center world Conference at Washington, DC earlier this month. “We are still trying to solve the problem since 20 years ago. These are not high-bandwidth or high-power data centers. We do not need them. We just need better connectivity. We need a strong network.”

Jacksonville, Florida -based startup provides small data centers (about the size of a shipping container) in rural areas, mostly in Texas Panhandals. He recently added such a data center to Amarilo, working with the local school district to provide more strong connectivity to the students. The school district runs its learning platform on Amazon Web Services (AWS), and can now store that platform locally in the data center.

Earlier, the data was to travel to Dallas more than 500 kilometers away. Network outage was a common phenomenon, which disrupts the student learning. Recar’s company paid an advance cost of US $ 1.2 to $ 1.5 million to create a 15-cabinet data center, which he calls a pod. Duos School is returning money by charging monthly use and maintenance fees (between $ 1800 and $ 3000 per shelf) to the district and other customers.

The company follows the approach of a ‘build needs and they’. Once the data center is established, RECR says, the current network providers co-identify there, providing excess and reliability to customers. Pod provides a seed that the network provider around which can build a hub-spoke-type network.

    Requirements for Edge Data Centers

The move to make these edge data centers financially profitable is reducing their energy use and maximizing their credibility. To reduce energy use, Duos uses relatively old, time-tested equipment. For reliability, each piece of tool is duplicated, including uninterrupted power supply batteries, generators and air conditioning units.

They have to detect pods in places where there will still be a large number of potential customers in sufficient number to justify the construction of the 15-rack pod (the equipment is rented per rack).

The pods are unmanned, but efficient and timely maintenance is important. “Says your AC unit goes down at two in the morning,” says racker. “It is fruitless, but you don’t want it to be down, so you have to send someone who can go into a pod at two in the morning.” Duos has a system to send maintenance workers, and an auditing standard that keeps an eye on all the tasks that have been done or need to be done on each tool. Each pod has a clean room to prevent workers from outside dust or dirt while working on maintenance workers.

Compact Data Center Amarilo School allows the district to have cheap and reliable connectivity for its digital learning platforms. Students will soon have access to AI-operated equipment, simulation and real-time data for their classes. “Pod enables to do so as they can calculate on the site and host the environment on the site where they could not do so due to the issues of delay,” says racker.

Duos is also keeping the Texas Panhandal, as well as Florida. And they are demanding so much in Amarilo that they are planning to install another pod. Reker says that although he initially built a pod in collaboration with the school district, other local institutions were quickly interested, including hospitals, utility companies and farmers.
