- The New York Times is requested to maintain all CHATGPT conversations as part of its trial against Openai and Microsoft
- This would mean that a record of all your chatgpt conversations will be kept forever forever.
- Openai argues that chat with AI should be a personal conversation
Back in December 2023, New York Times launched one Case against Openai and Microsoft, Allegations of copyright violation. The New York Times alleges that Openai trained its Chatgpt model, which also strengthens Microsoft’s copy “by” copying and using millions of articles of its articles without permission.
The lawsuit is still going on, and the New York Times (and other plaintiffs involved in the case) as its part has demanded that OpenaiI has been designed to maintain consumer chat and API customer data indefinitely, which is a lot for the IRE of OpenaiAI CEO Sam Altman, who took X.Com. Do“We have recently been thinking about the need for something like ‘AI Privilege’; it really intensifies the need for conversation. Talking to AI should be like talking to a lawyer or doctor. I hope the society will find it soon.”
Recently, NYT told a court that we should force us to remove any user chat. We think it was an improper request that sets a poor example. We are appealing to take a decision. We will fight any demand that compromises our users’ privacy; This is a main principle.June 6, 2025
Openai has described the New York Times trial as “baseless”, and in a long post Openai website The title, ‘How we are responding to the demands of’ how New York Times ‘data, to protect the user privacy’, Openai fulfilled its approach to privacy.
Brad Licap, COO, OpenEE say NYT demands “originally struggles with the privacy commitments made to our users. It releases long -standing confidential norms and weakens secrecy security.”
Private investigation
As more and more people share intimate details of their lives with AI chatbots, often the role of a physician, I can appreciate the need to be able to keep AI conversations private, however, I can also see NYT’s approach to see all this to support my claims against Openai.
At the moment, when you remove the conversation, a Chatgpt chat is immediately removed from your account, and within 30 days is determined for permanent deletion from the Openai system. The order will mean that even the deleted Chatgpt conversations will have to be maintained by Openai.
As a chat user, I have always appreciated the ability to be able to completely remove interaction. If Openai is forced to follow this request, it is too much to affect every person who uses service, either a free, plus, pro, or teams (but not enterprises or edu account holders).
This order also does not affect API customers who are using zero data retention closing points under the ZDR modification of Openai.
Openai has said that it has appealed to the Judge of the District Court for the order and will inform us when it knows more.
