Self -satellite catchs tsunami wave after dastard earthquake

The US-French swot (Surface Water and Ocean Topography) satellite captured the leading edge of the tsunami wave rolling through the Pacific Ocean on 30 July 2025 (local time), which was killed by Russia’s doodle peninsula. About 70 minutes after the earthquake, the satellite captured the data. Swot is designed to map the oceans and freshwater on Earth. The satellite recorded data from the tsunami as it passed through the deep ocean.

According For NASA, the SWOT satellite was jointly developed by NASA and French Space Agency CNES (Center National D’Tududes Spatiles). NASA provided the C-Band radar interferometer (Karin) instrument, a GPS science receiver, a laser retrorsflector, a two-beam microwave radiometer and NASA Instrument Operations. Integrated by Doppler Orbitography and Radiopogen Satellite System, dual frequency Posidon ultimate, Karin Radio-Frequency Subsistam, Satellite Platform and Ground Operations were provided by CNES.

It helps map advanced technology and special radar Swot to map the height of the ocean surface. In this case, the height of the tsunami wave and the measurement of the size of the shape in the open water showed that the major edge of the wave was about 1.5 feet (45 cm) high. It also captured the profile and direction of the wave as it traveled towards the coastal areas. Such detailed measures of a tsunami in the sea are unprecedented.

Better disaster forecast

The NOAA Center for Tsunami Research tested its forecasting model using new satellite data and found that the forecast accuracy, including the measurements of the swot, could significantly improve. NASA’s osteenographer Ben Hamalington said that a 1.5-foot tsunami in the deep ocean may also grow in a 30-foot wave on the coast and it is important to find it quickly. Vasili Titov, the chief scientist at the Center for Tsunami Research of NOAA, said that this observation suggests that SWOT operating can greatly increase the tsunami forecast – 2004 Sumatra ability has long been sought since the disaster.
