The signal announced the introduction of a new cryptographic component, spurs post-quantum shaft (SPQR) designed to withstand quantum computing dangers.
SPQR will serve as an advanced mechanism that updates the encryption keys used in frequent interactions and leaves older people.
The signal is a cross-platform, end-to-end encrypted messaging and calling app managed by a non-profit signal foundation, with an estimated monthly active user base of up to 100 million.
The new component guarantees privacy and post-compromise protection, ensuring that even in case of major compromise or theft, the future messages exchanged between parties will be secured.
In terms of cryptography, the SPQR egg-vic-vicious uses post-quantum-eneca-ankapsulation mechanism (ML-KEM) rather than the egg-cycle siphy-heelman, and facilitates efficient changing and ereizure coding to handle large significant sizes without bandwidth.
Signal has been using the implementation of the elliptical curve siphy-haleman as well as a crystal-kebar (a quantum KMEM) to protect from quantum computing attacks since 2023 which threatens to break the current encryption.
However, the SPQR comes at the top of the existing double shaft system, indicating what the signal says to the triple shaft, prepares a hyper-system “mixed key”.
“When you want to send a message, you ask both double shaft and SPQR” Which encryption key should I use for the next message? “And both of them will give you a key,” Reads the announcement of signal,
“Either the key is being used directly, both are passed in a major etymology function-a special function that takes random-suited input and produces a safe cryptographic key that you need. It gives you a new” mixed “key that has hybrid protection.”
The new system was designed in collaboration with PQSHIELD, AIST (Japan), and New York University, with its technical foundation located on Usenix 2025 and Eurocrypt 2025 papers.
The design was formally verified using the proverf, and the strength of corrosion implementation was tested using the HAX tool. Continuous verification will now be applied to all future constructions, ensuring that evidence with every code change will be reproduced.
The signal says that the rollout of the SPQR on the messaging platform will be gradual, and users do not need to take any action for upgrade in addition to keeping their customers updated in the latest version.
The new system would have lagged behind in the sense that, when a SPQR-capable customer communicates with someone who does not yet support the technology, the security model will be downgrated.
Once SPQR is made available to all customers, the signal will apply it to all sessions.
