If you have ever wished a text-to-spicch feature on your Mac, then did a better job, Bidding There may be a solution for you. This is a free Mac application that lets you use modern AI transcription on your Mac for free – just triggers the application with a keyboard shortcut, say what you want to type, and see as it appears on the screen.
Whatever you feel about modern AI, it is difficult to deny that it is good to convert spoken words into a lesson. Whether it is a real -time transcription or a video or audio file making a transcript, open source whisper The engine is accurate and faster. Spokenly is a free application that lets you use this technique on your Mac.
Install the application, which is Currently free at Mac App StoreAnd it will start in your menu bar. Transcribing is simple: Just press the right command button and you will see the pop-up, as shown above. Say what you want to type and let go when you are done – the lesson will appear in the currently active text area.
You can only install the application honestly, use it in this way, and never think of settings – it mostly just works. If you want to dig, however, open the settings by clicking and clicking on the menu bar icon. General SettingsYou can decide that the application menu will appear in the bar, dock or both. You can decide which microphone you want in favor of the application, assuming that you use more than one. And you can decide that the transmitted text should be copied on your clipboard by default.
If you like to experiment with AI, however, you should check out Sound Tab. From here, you can choose which AI model you want to use. By default, the application uses an online version of the “Whisper Large V3”, the only model that supports showing your transcription in the pop-up window as you are talking. There are other models that you can use, however, including GTP-4O via spoke.

If you will not use an online service, there is a locally support to download and run various whisper models. You have to find a balance between hard drive space, performance and accuracy – I recommend trying some models until someone works for you. There is also support for using Deepgram, fireworks, and OpenAI API Keys, assuming that you are already paying for one of those services.
If you don’t know what it means, don’t worry: the default model works very well. And there is much more to dig with this application. Transcription file The tab of the settings window lets you connect any video or audio file and get a transcription with or without timestamps. Even support for creating subtitle files for your video.

And there are some power-user tools that you can set. quick order The tab lets you choose some combinations of words that run an action instead of transcripting. Just choose a trigger phrase and what you want to do that phrase – open an URL, launch an application, or run one of your apple shortcuts. For example, you can install our homepage as “Open Lifehakar” and URL as a trigger phrase. Do this and Lifehakar website will say every time your words “Open Lifehakar,” in the words of improving your life (one considers one).

Another feature, AI indicatesAllows you to set a signal that will change your text after determining it. Just choose a separate keyboard shortcut and type your prompt for lesson. For example, you can write a prompt that says “Translate this lesson into Spanish” -You can now use a custom keyboard shortcut to translate something before using AI to use AI. Any signal you may think will work.
All these features are the same application, which I like, which I like. And the application is completely free as this writing, while offering features that allow you to use it privately. If you want you can get more than transcription software, try it.
