Earlier this month was high expectations when a group of astronomers of Cambridge reported that they found the “strongest evidence” of life on an exoplanet called K2–18B. Their claims bounce by detecting dimethyl sulfide (DMS), which is a gas associated with biological activity in the Earth’s atmosphere. The James web space was conducted using the JWST, the search suggested that the planet could be a water, a living world. But a detailed examination of facts now causes serious doubts about the truth of their bold claims.
Amidst new analysis K2-18B increases doubt on the claims of life and calls for more data
As Study Posted on 22 April, Jake Taylor of Oxford University applied a neutral statistical test, which found no clear molecular signature in JWST data, just a flat line. Studies show that the signal is either noise or is very weak to provide strong conclusions. The first Cambridge-led study detected a three-igma DMS detected below the five-igma threshold, which is usually necessary to prove major scientific discoveries. Critics also questioned the absence of supporting compounds such as ethane and claimed that the planned model may have exaggerated the DMS level.
Astrobiologist Eddie Shwitarman and Michela Mussilova noted that the current evidence does not meet strict norms to prove life; Thus, many independent teams are required to analyze the same dataset.
In further complex cases, new research indicates that the K2–18B can be very close to its star to maintain liquid water, possibly out of the habitable area. Connecting skepticism, DMS was recently detected on a cold comet, suggesting that such molecules could be present without life. Madhuskhan, the lead author of the original research, has supported the conclusions, but the tailor’s testing is exempted as a very simple and “irrelevant” for their claim.
Most of the scientists agree that DMS existence in the K2–18B environment depends on the additional solid, colleague-reviewed research. The logic still continues, an ongoing story shows how science develops not with certainty but with question and improvement.
