For a long time, after years of waiting for the “Year of Linux Desktop”, we are getting somewhere.
As US federal government website and app analyticsWhich I think I trust more than the stateCounter, in the previous month 6% of its visitors were using the Linux operating system.
Disliked
This website monitors and analyzes the visit to the US government website. There have been an average of 1.6 billion sessions in the last 30 days, in which millions of users participate daily.
If you add to Android (16.2%) and Chromebooks (0.8%), you are talking about 23%visitors using Linux, which keeps it above Macos (11.7%), Windows 10 (15.7%), and Windows 11 (15.3%), which is indispensable. That, take the windows.

An all -time high
Fedes only show that Linux Desktop has become a real player.
According to the web analysis company Statcounter, the US Linux Desktop market has stepped up to 5% points. To be accurate, in June 2025, Linux Desktop reached a new level of 5.03%In fact, if you add to chromos, a Linux distro that uses the Chrome web browser as its interface, according to the Linux Desktop StateCounter, has reached an all -time high of 7.74%.

Before you break the champagne, however, keep in mind that the number of stateconcuers should be taken with a mountain of salt. Ed Bottle and I find both the statistics of the Statecourse. As Bottle recently stated: “Statecocter’s ‘Market Share’ reports are a great excuse for tech bloggers to crank a story every month, but they only have the most casual relationship for the real world, and most of those month-to-month spikes are only statistical noises.”
Why? Statue PCs or users do not count. Instead, it counted its web pages with more than 1.5 million websites. Every month, the company records about 5 billion -page scenes. For each page view, it records the browser and operating system.

It feels good, but when it comes to counting users and their operating system, it is very fuzzy. In other words, the number of Statcounter is good for normal trends, but you should not trust them for nuances.
Linux is growing
Keeping this in mind, there is good news for Linux Desktop. Over the years, Linux’s desktop shares are slowly climbing, but its growth rate has increased. According to the numbers of Statcounter, in 2020, Linux Desktop had only 1.5% market share. In 2021, it touched 2%, and the following year it reached 2.76%. By 2023, it reached a new level of 3.12%. In 2024, it exceeded 4%. In the global market, it is not yet at 5%, but it is still above 4%.

This means that, although we may not be determined about the exact numbers, Linux is clearly increasing. Let’s look closely.
While I have been using Linux on my desktop almost from the beginning, it took about 20 years to reach the market share on the desktop – but you needed to be a technical to get the most from Linux. After reaching 1% in 2011, it took almost a decade to double it by 2%. It took just two years to jump from 2% to 3%, and 3% to 4% took less than a year.
