It attracts any slugs and snails to crawl (and drink beer), where you can easily implicate them. Just remember to check and empty the container regularly.
And you will need to replace beer (preferably one you do not like to drink), to ensure that the odor is always fresh – more effective. In fact, a bowl of beer is also one of the ways to get rid of fruit flies.

Alternatively, if you do not want to waste a good drink, there are other things that you can do to stop slugs and snails from attacking your yard.
